Is Higurashi no Naku Kori Ni obscure? If so, definitely that one. It's the one anime I've watched, and I love it.
Can you feel it mister Krabs?

Lol, maria holic is not obscure. Here's some really obscure anime, Aoi Bungaku. Do these glasses look hipster at all? Or just nerdy?

Nope. Far as I'm considered they're obscure for a reason, and that's because they follow a stupid overdone formula. The only way anime is going to be popular is if it breaks out of that mold and appeals to an average viewer.
I've read a few good obscure mangas back in the day though, few of which I can remember the names of.

HEY GUYS HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THAT ANIME CALLED GURREN LAGGAN? It's so amazing because it has robots and dah people are piloting the robots and then you get robots in your robots.
But Seriously, an obligatory "Post your favorite obscure x" is going to go nowhere but downhill. Also i agree with the guy who said More obscure stuff is generally worse, which is why it's not well known.

Hey, you might like Beserk. It's pretty "uncommon" but it's fucking amazing if you have the time to read the manga for it. The first chapters are typical and mary sue for a fantasy, but then it takes you to a strict medieval setting for a long time, then medieval fantasy. Manly as fuck, imo.

I'm mainly a reader of Dan Brown and what the fuck is going on in this thread
If you didn't pick up the hint, I have little to no knowledge of anime and I really don't like it.

Bleach is very well known but it's so underrated, people love to take a shit on it, but I think it's awesome. It's something I can watch and enjoy, it's not one of those shows that I need to analyze. It's basically just an action show. ALTHOUGH! Now that it's entering its final arc, I expect the plot to be the main focus. Kubo has to stop being afraid of killing of main protagonists, and I want ALL lose ends tied up.
I will be very upset if Uryu doesn't kill Kurotsuchi, and I would be disappointed if Renji didn't surpass Byakuya.

Yeah, okay, dood.
I'm sure you've seen all the obscure anime out there to validate this wild claim you just made! You're a pro, alright!
Lack of large audience, no popularity =/= the actual quality of the series in question. Anyone who thinks otherwise has no idea what he's talking about. It's actually the other way around, really; tons and tons of series get attention they don't deserve because they follow successful formulas, and therefore get an audience(AKA, Otaku's). Shows like Bebop only got popular on western shores because it came out at the right time and place, it fit into a certain niche, right when the anime boom of the 90's-early 2000's in the US was still in full effect. Bebop isn't that popular in Japan, matter of fact, it got canceled at one point due to it's violent content.
To answer OP's question. I watch plenty of more obscure or underrated series. Rose of Versailles, Oniisama e, Ace wo Nerae!, Revolutionary Girl Utena, 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother, Les Miserables: Shoujo Cosette, Hime-Chan. City Hunter, Takarajima and Future Boy Conan.
That's not even half of it. There are plenty of great shows out there that simply never got/don't get the attention they should be getting.

Maybe not entirely obscure, it's based after a game but then not many people played said game, and even less people knew it was turned into an anime. Disgaea, it was a mini series, lasted 12 episodes.

I'm kind of hard pressed to find obscure anime that I'd consider trash and best left forgotten, aside from something like Odin: Starlight Mutiny, Mars of Destruction or Sword for Truth.
However there are many shows that are popular BECAUSE they are very good, because ever since anime was easily accessible people started watching all of the anime in every season.
Maybe it's BECAUSE anime has become more accessible over the last decade, that we actually get just as much ridiculous sexualized garbage as we do something genuinely creative and quality. Why put in more effort to write good dialogue, good story lines, good development, when anime fans will seemingly just kind of take in whatever is fed to them, now?
It all boils down to subjectivity, I guess. I just don't think popularity ever =/= quality. Are some good shows popular? Damn right, there's a decent amount.

I agree. One of the main reasons why said anime isn't popular is because more often than not, it was made in low quality, {which is the usually the case for most anime} or it was made for a specific audience in mind, that very few people outside of the key demographic would enjoy, among other things. That doesn't mean that all obscure or even unpopular anime is bad, but more often than not, they're obscure for a good reason, and remember that most {if not all} anime is made by huge studios that need to make a profit on said anime. It's virtually the same thing with movies, video games and music.
If you want some examples on some good obscure anime, {IMO} here you go.
Mad Bull 34
Windaria
Sengoku Basara
Black Lion
Roujin Z
And it is only the other way around with mega popular anime. Shit like Naruto is garbage and over rated.
This.
However there are many shows that are popular BECAUSE they are very good, because ever since anime was easily accessible people started watching all of the anime in every season.
Popularity =/= quality and the reverse is true as well, but I would like to think that even the most casual anime fan out there knows what a decent show is, regardless if it was aired in American TV or not. It's really all up to personal taste more than anything else, and everyone is going to have their opinions on what's good and what's not.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.
