As for why they look boring...well, to answer that question, one would have to see your pieces, now wouldn't they?

you might not be using transparency but still have it checked in your export/save settings

It depends on what music genre you're in, for Heavy Metal you can just download the "Luftwaffe" font. Then open photoshop, use the font in white and write your bands name on black backround and thats it.
If you're making dubstep you should have a light backround, maybe try using a 3d modeller.
