I'm not saying don't go, but you should think about it. Most lawyers have 100's of thousands of dollars of debt and there are too many; they make 40,000 if they are lucky out of school. Some work at McDonalds.
If you work in a Verizon store you can make 55,000 a year without debt.
Just saying, you should search in the area you plan on living to see what the average salary is. You should also expect your schooling to cost somewhere around $10,000 more in your fourth year than it did in your first year. No one told me these things. I graduated in the worst job market since the depression. So, if you go to college its a crap shoot.
That said, if you don't like retail and you're not good with people, you probably should go to college. Its just not nearly what its cracked up to be. Its a great 4 years; stressful, yet fun. Liberating. But your soul gets crushed after you graduate unless you are in the 10 % that gets to be happy.
Friendly warning. Now you know.
And knowing is half the battle.

Yea i agree with you. Like i think the concept of college is good, but i find that alot of colleges have outdated regimens and that their vision isnt suited for the digital world that exists today. That and they are way overpriced (atleast here in the US). Like i understand my parents apprehension and demands for me to goto college(which i did) but i think they are out of touch with the job field nowadays. I think when i raise my kids i will steer them the right way but wont press college heavily on them. It is alot of money to be in debt with after youre all done with it.
I've only just recently paid off all my loans and ive been out of college for like 10 years now. Its a harsh harsh pill to swallow once you graduate college and are looking for a job and you already have these institutions hunting you down for money you now owe them.

dont listen to this idiot.
most ppl who go to college are brainless idiots with no real goals in life.
theyre better off there developing a career than doing nothing or trying to compete in the real world with competent people
college = good for idiots

Don't go to college. Lend money to students for compound interest.

Also, in response to the OP, would you say going to college to be a teacher is worth it? It's really what I've wanted to do for a living, but I've heard being a teacher is a horrible job to have salary-wise.

I avoided university since I still don't know what the hell I want to take a career in. Could do without a huge loan added to jobs that likely don't relate.

Using anything after someone's name to insult them is stupid and implies that you are a 14 year old with no life.
Besides, it's okay to pretend you are a severe homophobic, but we all know that, in real life, you are as homosexual as they come.

I wish my high school hadn't been so gung-ho about getting every kid into college to boost their statistics to make the local educational system look better. Mu guidance counselor was the absolute worst kind of educator. She didn't take any time to get to personally know me or try to get my interests out of me. I remember going into her office and she just sat me down in front of a list of majors and told me to choose one. That it wasn't a big deal because I could always change it later on. I wish I could tell her how demeaning it was to go off to college not knowing why, that it had just been an arbitrary decision, and feeling like a complete failure when I dropped out after a semester.
Happy ending is that I was able to more clearly find a path in community college, and I eventually went back to a four year school, but even that was after a lot of depression and just generally being confused about what to do with my life. I don't think most people get a second chance and there's a lot of people who leave school just as lost as when they enter it. That may be even worse than spending once semester and giving up.

Several reasons why I'm attending community college are because it's dirt cheap (compared to universities, al least), and because it's nearby. Easy, cheap credits. In the mean time, you can get a job and save up for the big-timey ones.
This is my signature. It is a nice signature.

Since no one else has responded with this yet:
Go Joe.
And yes, a college education does not guarantee a job market for your degree. This is verified.

...Is this kid serious? He's not serious right? Cause that would be just sad if he was. He would look like a HUGE tool if he was being serious.

For me, it's not so bad. When I graduate from university I'll be coming into the real world debt free. The government pays my tuition fees and I still live at home, so have no real living expenses. I just wonder how hard the job process will be afterwards. Regardless of whether or not I end up with a job related to my degree, I just feel comforted knowing that I wont have a massive debt on my shoulders.
I think a lot of parents seem to have this belief that when you graduate you're guaranteed a job. I get the feeling that's the sort of idea that my parents have, which in a way makes me wonder how they're going to react when I no doubt struggle to find work. I'm pretty certain that I'm going to struggle to find work related to my degree as well, unless I move to a city, which is my general plan. But how do you move to a city without having money? How do you get money without having the job (which would be in the city)? I almost feel trapped in this town.
Oh, and if you were wondering why the government pays for my tuition fees, it's common in Scotland. All Scots who choose to study in Scotland will have their tuition fees paid for them. The idea being that when they graduate and start making money, the tax they pay will contribute to the next generation of students. It's a nice system.

My parents are the type that really really want me to go to college. As if I have no say in the matter. I've gone my life thinking like that, building my life around the 12+ years I would be going to become a psychiatrist. However, recently I've been considering alternatives. Just getting a stable job and continuing my life humbly. Instead of going on being bored out of my mind working towards a degree in order to please my parents, I'd do what I'd want to, live where I want to live, etc.
Of course, my parents aren't going to like that one bit. But nonetheless, my plot will continue.

In the UK, they've recently raised tuition fees from £3000 per year to £9000 and as a result there has been a massive decline in applications for university
A spokesman from UCAS (university admissions) said "It seems the prospect of £9,000 a year in fees has made many people realise that university is actually quite an important thing to do.
"So if you are going to spend that kind of money you should probably mean it."
In short, people are beginning to realise that just because university exists doesn't mean you have to go to it

In short, the government are money grabbing pricks that will do anything to turn a buck.
