um, jquery is for Javascript, not Java...

You will need the JDK to compile and such, Eclipse is a common IDE, but I tend to use notepad...

In the other Java thread I link to the Oracle Java tutorials, so check those out.

I believe Eclipse is the most widely used IDE out there. I've used it quite a bit and have grown to like it. The built-in debugger is great. Like you mentioned, JCreator is another very simple IDE. It's a great beginner tool with just enough features to actually be able to call it a full fledged IDE. IntelliJ is another very powerful IDE. I don't have too much experience with it, but I have coworkers who absolutely swear by it. If you want to avoid all the clutter of an IDE, consider using a simple text editor with highlighting like Notepad++ for Windows or gedit for linux.

Notepad, you won't have any auto completion making things easy for you, so you will learn more.

DR. Java.

I know it is not top shit, but its the best lighweight java developing tool i've seen.
I prefer this to notepad because of integrated compiler.

Yep this is how I've learned it as well. Its great for the first week or so. It really forces you to get that syntax in your head instead of pressing Ctrl + Space all the time when in eclipse.
Integrated compiler makes it easy to test little things (3 / 2 == 1). Later when you have it all in your head its good to move on to a more advanced work-flow to automate programming.
