We're not talking about a human here just an animal holy shit it's not like it was your baby dying on the street. I'd say putting it out of its misery was a reasonable decision, remember this is an animal...

The dog's owner was suffering greatly. Why didn't you put him out of his misery as well?

theres a lot the OP has graciously left out (in fact the story is probably fabricated) and he also seems like a dick. if the story is true i would have hated to find someone drowning my pet, mercy killing or not.
