Got Fired!!!

So tonight at work wasn't so bad, I was in a positive mood and ready to go.
I did a great job and worked my hardest, I stayed an extra 30 minutes to do more work, and then I went upstairs to clock out and grab my jacket.

While I was walking up the stairs, I was called on the intercom to go to the manager's office, where both managers were waiting for me. I figured it wasn't going to be good, but I didn't assume I would get fired.

I walked in and sat down, they told me that because I inquired about working part time overnight instead of full time, they had to let me go.

I inquired about part time because I want to focus on school in two months, I want to get my grade twelve and then go to school for broadcasting, I made that clear to them and then told them after they said it wasn't possible, that I was OK working full time if I had no other choice.

Well, since then they started looking for somebody else to take my position, and apparently they found someone.

In my managers words, I'm not fit for night shift (the only shift I've ever worked in my life, at both jobs), and worrying about school is more important in the long-run.

So, these same managers will NOT fire three kids for getting high on their fifteen minute break and coming in to work stoned, but they will fire me, a person who is fully willing to work the shift given to him, doesn't touch drugs, and gets every job handed to him done without error.

He is willing to be used as a reference for any job I apply for, but apparently I can't work there because I simply inquired about the possibility of part time, but was completely willing to work the full time.

Does anybody want to hire me? Tom do you need any extra hands around the office? I'll clean your toilets.

So find a new job that will fill the empty space. There's literally nothing else you can do except find a new job and stop worrying about the old one. They don't want you, and there are people in positions who don't deserve it. Welcome to real life.

That's too bad to hear Luke, the same thing happened to my mum where she didn't like working in the storeroom as part of her job and she said something similar to her bosses and they decided to fire her even though she said she was still fine to work there.

I'm not sure why they do this but I know there is a reason (whether its logical or not.)

Hopefully you'll find another job just as good more or less than your old one.

Is it legal to fire you for simply inquiring? It isn't really a valid reason to fire anyone.

That doesn't mean you are going to win.

In my honest opinion you should be allowed to fire anyone for any reason as long as you don't discriminate based on beliefs, race, gender, or sexual preference, or anything that does not directly relate to the quality of one's work.

To the OP.... I'm sorry that you got canned. Take a week off.... but then its best to get those applications flowing asap.

Maybe they are afraid that if you stay full time you won't finish your schooling and they don't want to be responsible for that. Maybe in their minds they are doing you a favor. Hopefully you can find another job that fits your schedule better.

Sounds like your schooling could be paid for, I suggest talking to a lawyer and seeing what your options are. If you have any paperwork saying that they would fire you because you didn't do something you though was unreasonable, bring it. The Canadian Labour Board loves cracking down on abusive employers.

Well, there is this hospital called HealthSouth that I think might have some positions open, albeit now, they would probably only have ones that are part time. Of course, you would have to move all the way to Panama City, Florida, in order to get what you wanted, and it probably wouldn't be worth all the time and effort to move seeing as how you might not even get the job (and probably won't, I only got it because my dad knew someone).

I agree, it sucks that they let you go like that. It sounds like they just needed an excuse to ditch you (or someone) and figured they had the opportunity now.

But perhaps they're only looking for long-term employees and if you're planning to go back to school and do something different then they'd rather get someone who will still be working there for the next couple of years at least. Or perhaps they misunderstood your request for "I'm not that motivated anymore".

Yeah, that's what I was thinking may be why too, they did say that schooling is more important.

It just sucks because now of all times, I really need money and now that isn't possible.

I'm going out today and applying at some places for a part time shift though, I suppose it'll be better to make it clear that I plan on going back to school soon when I am interviewed, rather than a month in to employment, though I wasn't planning on it when I first started the job.

I just hope I can get a new one soon, I had a lot of things in mind this year that require some money, and now they may not happen.
