I remember this one time where my brother got suspended for a few days because he stabbed a pencil into a book and people thought that was an act of violence or something. Schools can be rather pushy about these things, seeing as how there are many reports of school shootings.

Zero tolerance is a stupid policy. They should take it to a case to case basis in case shit like this happens. It seems they almost wanted him to keep it hidden in his bag and take it home unknown to them he even had it.
I AM THREAD KILLER!
It wasnt his fault, they dont have the right to suspend him

^ Exactly this. The schools will always act like a bunch of pussies no matter what. \

He probably thought that the school wouldn't care considering he immediately brought it to their attention once he noticed the mistake

It was a potential danger, but if he turned it in right away, the teacher should have kept their mouth shut. Why the fuck was there a knife in there?

But he didn't show it to other people. He was being responsible and gave it to an adult like he should have.

By "other people" I meant the teacher. Sorry if I was unclear on that.

Except it could significantly impact his chances of getting accepted to a college that's even the slightest bit competitive. No college is going to just look the other way for a kid who is on the books as having brought a knife to school regardless of the circumstances. It's most likely not a complete nail in the coffin of his future, but it's by no means a win-win situation, either.

For what reason? In this example, the rule's intent was to prevent knife violence. No one cares about the possession of knives just like no one cares about the possession of shirts or pencils. It's what you can do with knives that you can't do with shirts or pencils that is the concern. By making it an offense to bring a knife to school, they're preventing violence. But in this case, by punishing the kid for coming forward, they're reinforcing the idea that students should make every effort to lie. By setting the precedent that kids who come forward will get punished, if this kind of accident happens again, the kid isn't going to come forward, thus increasing the presence of knives (and subsequently, the theoretical potential for violence) in the school.
So, not only is it wrong on moral grounds, but it's a bad idea, too.
