It was explained to me that you will never make any money or get a good job if you don't goto college and get a degree. What I don't get is why is this necessary? I am looking into music production, video game design, computer engineering, programming, networking, and other possible technology based careers. I already know how to do these things, and I know it takes skill, which I have. So why do I need to goto college? What is the purpose of it if I already know how to do the things I do? To me, it doesn't make any sense.
These are the two outcomes I get depending on the choice I make of either going to college, or not.
1. I either work at McDonalds for the rest of my life and be poor.
2. or two, I become a rich doctor...
I don't want to be a doctor, and if I don't goto college, I already have the talent and skill to work with anything technological. I'm sure that pays good money.
So why can't I work in those jobs? Do I really need to waste my parents money and time of my life trying to get a degree, A PIECE OF PAPER! Just to "prove" I can do something? Shouldn't my skills actually be tested for the job, instead of relying on a piece of paper?
I have the talent and love for technology, and there's nothing I would rather do. I could already be working and make good money, while others waste their time in a college, getting a title such as "doctor" and then having their life wasted as they aren't even guaranteed a job.
Actually, I can think of about 5 jobs that all earn $40,000 to $120,000 and don't require a college education. Most of them are the jobs most people don't want though, majority within the DOC.
A college degree is proof of your work ethic and that you actually know what your doing. Employers would rather not take risks and someone with a degree is less risky than someone that seems to know his stuff but has no degree.

Not true.

That's pretty much what I get from anybody...

No, I'm going to be a music producer, a programmer, or work with computers.
All which I already know.
And why do I have to goto college when I can just look anything up online and learn it instantly.

Not necessary. Don't listen to your guidance counselors that tell you this shit. It's very easy (Well, not with our current job market, but besides things like recessions) to be able to get an entry level job and work your way up.
Sure, you may end up not making as much out the gates, but you also don't run the risk of spending a couple grand on a degree that can end up turning out worthless.

Well, you listed a bunch of your interests. You could go to college and get degrees in almost all of those fields and end up with a good job. Not going to college is harder, much harder but you can still end up in a good career with some work. But yeah, the easier route (in the end) is going to college.

Probably, but I know with programming, or hacking, or anything, a fancy degree doesn't guarantee you abilities to write code like a pro. It all leads up to hard work and dedication.

With jobs like that, you could probably do individual clients or small businesses and build up a resume to eventually get by without a degree
