According to the new cartoon that is true.
Trying to embrace Ben's words "Anatomy's overrated, draw something interesting instead"
although I don't think I have quite reached the level of harmony with that philosophy that Ben intended yet, but perhaps if I can, then I can produce better work.
Look at my rock, now look at your rock, now look back at my rock again, Sadly your rock is not my rock. My rock is a sexy demonstration of rocks rocking out with their rocks out.
Sexy rock....

I hate drawing rocks.

Would you say its cause they don't get your "rocks" off?

I dig it. The design is interesting; it almost looks like it is wearing metal armor.

This one is awesome.
Oh awesome. How did you do it? I've etched glass with a dremel before, but it was really hard to get smooth linework like you have here.

Well I used an etching cream called Armour Etch to do the actual etching. I thought of the dremel route as well, but I was afraid of my hand being unsteady.
A lot of people, including the site mention using vinyl stencils and although I want to move in to that I didn't have the vinyl to play with.
I found that packing tape can be a viable stencil materiel So I taped the glass, the tapped the image I wanted to etch, cut it out with a knife, popped out the pieces I wanted etched, and Applied the cream, it takes just a few minutes to work and then wash it off and remove the tape.
A friend's dad is going to let me use his Sand Blaster if I decide to make any on a large scale. But I have to get to the vinyl stage first.
Ok, here is my ridiculously crude process. Although Crude, it is somewhat effective
1. I Took some old packing tape I had and tapped the glass. it smells like ass, but it gets the job done. I tried to make sure there wasn't any air bubbles. Any that got trapped, I poked a hole in to them and pushed out the air. Another problem is creases. these will really fuck your shit up so try and avoid them.
2. Print out or draw your design and tape it to the glass. I don't really need to explain much here. Just try and get the template as flat as possible.
3. Take your Knife and start cutting. Again this is pretty self explanatory The paper stencil parts will fall out pretty easily, but thats not a big deal since the tape on the glass itself will remain.
4. Finish cutting and then start popping out the pieces you want etched to the glass. Using the tip of your knife will help you get them started until you can get a hold of it with your fingers or tweezers or something. Be sure to remove all the pieces you want etched.
5.Apply the Cream! And let it set for the proper time.
6.Wash it off. and wash it well. Running water from a sink will do just fine. You can remove the stencil at this point, but I would suggest on waiting until you get it dried off a little.
7. Touch up any missed spots with some more cream. I'm still new to this stuff so I didn't know if a second coat would actually work. But it did and all is great, This would be why you would want to wait on removing the stencil, and guess what, I didn't so I had to be a bit more careful.
Final See Below Although there is some mistakes in this one it came out well enough.
So yeah I have an AppleJack Glass now.

Nice. I'm tempted to try this man. The glasses are pretty cool.
Have you tried sticker paper? I've used printable packaging labels for making stencils to use on my airsoft guns. It would probably get rid of the problem with air pockets and creases as the stencil itself would stick to the glass rather than taping over it. Then again, it's probably a lot cheaper to just use paper and tape.
Good tutorial by the way.

I have mulled over the idea of some sort of sticker paper, and I don't see why it wouldn't work. I'll have to get some and give it a try. I guess as long as the cream doesn't sink through the paper then it should work fine.
I really do want to get some vinyl soon though and try it. Especially with the sandblaster

So does this Armour Etch just eat away a layer or two of glass then?

Or does it just build an extra layer or two on top of the glass.

It eats away at the glass itself. I was a bit skeptical at first and even tried scratching it off with a knife, but its definitely permanent.
Yeah I just looked it up the stuff is hydrofluoric acid. no wonder it has something like 15 ways to kill you listed on the bottle
This is awesome. I wanna get Orn's permission first, but mind if I move your excellently written tutorial over to the art101 account?

Sure go for it.
and here is Twilight Sparkle.
I also did a flutter shy, but gave it away before I got a photo of it. I still have Pinky Pie and Rarity to do, but have to wait until I get more glasses. Once I have the set done I'll get all of them together for a group photo.
Also a small update. I tried some of these Avery Color Coding Labels I found laying around and although they do have some trouble sticking to the glass, they work pretty well. They also are pretty easy to remove. But those two things could be because these are a couple years old.
Either way they give me a surface I can draw on easily ad make quick stencils out of.
Well Enjoy
