Okay, well this is a hypothetical situation. First off, I believe in god so I don't believe this is going to happen, but sometimes I think about it. What if once you died, you just laid there for eternity, and your soul just died. You didn't go to heaven or hell and you didn't reincarnate and you just perished. There would be no waking up since you are dead. I think of that has the most horrifying thing possible. What do you think?

I don't see how it can possibly be seen as "horrifying." It's just like before you were born.

I lost my best friend a couple months ago, he was only 22. I was disturbed thinking that once you die, you simply die and life goes on with out you. Just like before you were born, there was nothing, in death there could be the same. I sure hope not.

I don't think I would care, because I wouldn't even be able to care if it happened. There's no point in stressing over things that are completely out of your control.

It's scary because we're so used to living that the only thing we'll know is life. Until we die. It's the unknown because no one out there has lived through death to tell people what it's like. Once you die you're gone forever. Or are you? Who knows how it works? We can only find out when it's our time.
Am I scared of death? I'm not going to lie, I'm terrified of dying. But that's what happens to all of us. The one guarantee of life is knowing you'll someday die.
Yea, I farm Anal Penguins. Do something about it.

What if they found a way for eternal life right after you died?

It would be slightly annoying though, because I wouldn't be able to know how right I was for thinking that this would happen. Though of course, it wouldn't be annoying. Its annoying now though.

You'd be incapable of caring.

To be fair, you could have been horribly tortured before you where born and not know about it. What you're saying isn't exactly sound logic.

Of course I could have, but what are the chances of that? Quite low.

"Do not pity the dead Harry. Pity the living."

I love that quote! I've been starting at my bedroom window when I'd think about what happens when we die. Then I remind myself it's not worth worrying about, better live my life to the fullest.

I think that it would be more horrifying to live your entire life and your entire after-life under the watchful eye of an omnipotent, omnipresent big brother who will never let you grow up or learn for yourself, who won't allow you any privacy and knows every dirty thought that's ever gone through your mind, and is most likely planning a lake of fire for you based on the various sins and thought-crimes you've commited in your time on earth.
It's much more life-affirming to live knowing that this life is the one and only life you're ever going to get, so you'd best enjoy it while it lasts and make the most of it. Be thankful that out of the literally zillions of chances of life that could have existed, you were the lucky one that made it. Or you can be an ungrateful little shit and hope for something better that's going to last for eternity.

Yeah but there's no way of proving that they aren't lying about what they experienced when they briefly 'died', or that they aren't deluded.

Only if your conscious, then you have a lot of time to reflect upon your life, eternity in fact. To some that might be hell.

If death leads to nothing, which I believe it does, then it's the best thing possible.
You will never ever again experience something even the slightest bit negative. It doesn't matter that you'll never experience anything positive either, you'll be dead so it won't bother you at all.
People need to focus more on life (the thing that matters), than death.

What if you were a test subject for that, and the guy next to you was successful but you died?

It's natural to have a spiritual experience in the moments before death. That's the effect of the brain releasing large amounts of DMT (also responsible for dreams) as it shuts down.

I see what your are saying. I believe in god so I know this will not happen, but sometimes I wish it did, because the thought of being alive with all this pain is depressing, hopefully things will change.

Seems pretty likely to me. And you would not experience it at all so who cares. Live in the moment, cherish the present.

The only way it would be horrifying was if you had none of your senses, but still had the ability to think. Just thinking, for eternity.

No but I do fear death, well I fear no longer living. I do not believe in an afterlife and firmly believe that when we die then we're just dead. this scares me and the end of the universe scares me more because of the idea of NOTHING living ever again. Freaks me the fuck out.

If you take away religious delusions, that's what would most likely happen. All living creatures die, there's nothing that makes humans more "special" than any other animal.
