I was always curious about this, so I thought I'd finally ask.
Are there any songs that are considered "unsuitable" or "inappropriate" for people to remix/recreate (y'know, like a music production faux-pas)?
I'm referring to individual songs (like maybe "Canon in D") and song groups/categories (like national anthems).
If so, is the main problem the emotional attachment people have to the song in question, or maybe something to do with general respect to the artist's legacy/reputation (if there is one)?

as long as you create everything inside of your remix and don't use copyrighted samples and you are not doing it to be offensive i can't see it as a problem, also there are tons of covers of Canon in D on newgrounds.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I'm not thinking about doing anything like this as a submission. I just wanted to know what people think in general.

In my own humble opinion, I believe that as long as justice is done to the original track to the producer's best ability. There is no harm done.
Look at Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings for example, one of the most beautiful, moving pieces of music I have ever heard. It has been remixed countless times. Some have been good, others have not been so great.
Sometimes, without the popular remixes of certain songs, they would go "undiscovered". By that I mean, it would lie at the bottom of a very large, continually accumulating pile of music. Such was the case for me with Adagio for Strings. Thanks to Tiesto's remix, I discovered it and was extremely pleased I did.
Without Pendulum's The Island Part One, there wouldn't be Crimsonik or Madeon's unbelievable remake/remix.
Nothing is untouchable in the music world. (:
Major props if you can make a track from Metallica and Lou Reed's Lulu album any good.

Erik Saties "Gymnopedie 1" has always been hands off on my part, mostly because I just love the source so much, it seems almost sacrilegious for me to even try it.
I have been remixing it a lot of time without uploading it, I always feel bad afterwards, like I did something terrible.
Keep in mind, this comes from a guy who used to burn bibles.

Dude, what's your problem? All the remixes of 4:33 on NG are AWESOME! If you don't like it why don't you just get out? No, but seriously: I love how all those have a huge number of downloads, because people expect the NG player to be broken xD
As for forbidden: That would be explicit third reich propaganda for me. Except for that I don't see any boundaries.

I raged in the AF lounge not to long ago because of this remix of Avril 14th. Now I'm fine with tasteful remixes, but this is bad. It sounds almost tacked on for views.
In conclusion, I'll leave you with this comment from a soundcloud user,
"Lincol Park meets Dieselboy"

There are maybe two pieces of music that I consider absolutely sacrosanct: as in NOBODY should touch it, EVER: the Allegretto from Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, and Bach Cantata No's 140 & 208.
Other than that, go crazy.

Now if you want to get technical, yes, that's three things. I suck at counting.
