The Steam holiday sale has just started. Steam is currently a mess right now due to high traffic, so I can't actually see any of the daily deals. Besides that, will you be participating in the great gift pile event to win free games or will you save up your coal to try and win the Epic Holiday giveaway on Jan 2nd? (first place is every single game on Steam!)

I'm hoping to pick up Hard Reset, Deus Ex:HR and TW: Shogun 2 for the most part, anything else will be a bonus.

So anyway, what will you be picking up?

I shouldn't have to buy any games since I still have plenty to play but I know I'll buy stuff anyway excluding any possible gifts. For today's sales, I'd love to buy the Sam & Max games for a friend of mine so he can have fun playing through them.

Has anyone here been having trouble with opening their gifts? I got a free complimentary gift earlier but when I checked my Steam inventory it shows up with nothing. Might just be the system acting up since a lot of people is on Steam at the moment but I really wanna' know what's inside there.

I guess I'll just wait then. :(

There's not really a whole lot on Steam that I want (That I don't already have that is)... So I guess I'll just be hitting up the objectives for a chance at every game on Steam.

I actually made a good deal with my russian friend, I got him the Max Payne Bundle (2.49) and he's getting me insect armegedon for 10 buck (5 dollars cheaper in russia). He got Max because it's not available in Russia Steam, and you know russian's and their Max Payne.

Each day on Steam up until Jan 1st, a set of six game achievements will be revealed on the Great Gift pile page on Steam (there's a tab on the Steam homepage that will take you there) for each achievement completed, you will win a gift or a lump of coal. These achievements are from specific games picked by Steam. For example, one of the objectives today is just to simply visit your Steam inventory, you will get a gift or a lump of coal for doing so. The rest are game specific. In Orcs Must Die you need to complete the hallway using only the arrow wall trap, weapons, and spells.

Gifts can contain coupons or full games, both can be traded. If you find seven pieces of coal, it can be crafted into a gift, or you can save all your coal and wait till Jan 2nd when the giveaway starts and you might have a chance to win the grand prize.

Here is a compiled list of gifts you could possibly win.

I forgot to mention. Entries are based on the number of coal remaining in your inventory by Jan 2nd (10AM PST). You also need 10 items on your wishlist at that time to qualify for the giveaway.

I just checked this out - thanks for the information. Thus far, there are no achievements for today on games that I own, however I'm just about to purchase a few games now - twenty quid for EU3 Chronicles (now I own DW, and have it on steam :D), Orcs Must Die (and the two DLCs for it, also allowing me a chance at one of today's achievements if I can run it), in addition to Amnesia, Limbo and Terraria.

I'm pretty happy about this - even if some of them I cannot run perfectly on my current computer, I should be building a new rig in a month or twos time (if I don't spend all of my money saved for it on steam games in the meantime).

I want to win the grand prize, which is every game (for your region) on Steam but I don't think I will, I can't do any of todays events other than checking my inventory.

If anyone has a use for a -25% off a Valve game and wants the coupon I got, let me know, I will accept some useless TF2 item for it so long as it's one I don't own.

Also sales, nothing I want will get reduced.
