These are the top 10 cities with worst crime rates in the US, that are mid-sized cities, from population 100,000 to 500,000.
Any of a surprise to people, and have you been to or lived in any of these? I've been to Oakland and Richmond. Oakland has some really bad neighborhoods of course, but some really nice ones. Select parts of Richmond are decent, but it's just a shitty place in a lot of the city. But it's getting better.

They're only an hour so drive away from me, and they're practically next to each other... so yeah no surprise I guess.
Plus Jack London Square in Oakland is a cool place to hang out.

Oh eddy... i've seen a few people voting you for most improved because you had stopped making California related threads...
They should change their votes.
Oakland is pretty shitty though.

It's an American related thread.
Not all of Oakland is bad. Try Jack London Square, Chinatown (Chinatowns aren't great places to live, but nice to visit and eat and talk with the locals), and West Oakland, and Oakland Hills, Rockridge, and I'm forgetting plenty of areas. But almost of East Oakland is pretty bad.

Well for the 500,000+ list, yes. I wonder what these are based on though, just crime rates in general or specifically violent crimes or what.

Detroit actually covers up most of their crime statistics.
You'll never know the true "top 10 crime cities" because of this. Places with very high crime rates often hide these statistics.

That explains why New York isn't on the list, despite having five mafia families, three Russian bratvas, and hundreds of street gangs.

But but I thought when they banned guns everything was all safe and peachy?

Let me explain this simply.
Murdering = Committing a crime.
Buying a gun in New York = Committing a crime, but to a lesser extent.
If you're willing to break the law severely enough to do the former, you'll have no problem doing the latter.
Unless of course you were being ironic, in which case, sorry for missing it.

Hate to admit it, but since New Orleans is not listed on one of those lists they are wrong. Plain and simple.
N.O. has the highest murder rate in the entire country at 49 murders out of 727 violent crimes.
St. Louis comes in second with 40 murders out of 1,747 violent crimes.
Keep in mind these are only the murders the cops actually know about. Who knows about the people thrown off in the woods or down here in the swamp, especially. There's a nice variety of creatures that would devour a human within a few days in the swamp.

Well my street cred just went up I guess, but to be honest, in all likelihood these statistics mostly come from East St. Louis, and my honky ass lives far, far away from there.
That said, I have heard the street I live on referred to as "Mugger's Row" and less accurately but more hilariously, "Death Alley."

I've only ever been to New York City, which to my understanding, the crime rate there has improved significantly since the nineties. There are of course bad parts of every large urban area, but I've never felt unsafe in NYC.
I love it there.

When measuring homicide rate it should be the amount of annual homicides of a city in comparison to the total population of that city for that particular year. Then the results are usually expressed like so, "X amount of homicides per 100,000 citizens". With that said, I don't know what these lists are even based on, it doesn't say that they are based on homicides, violent crimes, all crime in general, etc. it just says "Most Dangerous" and "Safest".
