So I need to boost my weight by about ten KG, within the period of about five months. I'm doing this because I would like to apply for an Army bursary, and the lovely folk in the army would give me £4800 for doing so. However, I'm slightly underweight, and so need to raise mass. In your experience, what exercises or techniques are best for raising muscle mass?
No I don't want to get fat, just get more muscle mass.

Drink protein shakes and if you are working out with weights you should do less reps but with heavier weights

Focus on squats, bench press, rows, and even deadlifts. All of the exercises can greatly add on additional muscle mass if you do them correctly.
Cardinal rule being this: You need to revolve around high weight and lower reps. No more than 10 reps per set. Lower weight and higher reps is good for endurance and burning fat, but the complete opposite of what you are trying to do.
I'd also recommend buying Casein Protein. It's a slow digesting protein that's great to take at night. It takes longer to digest than Whey Protein and can provide your muscles with sustained food over a period of time. (Sleeping, working, e.t.c.)
If you're getting serious about it and have some further questions, shoot me a PM. I'm a state champion and Junior Olympic powerlifting champion.

Power lifting is a good way to get bulkier muscles, be careful in making sure your cardio doesn't suffer though. I'd recommend 4 sets of 6 rep max bench presses and squats followed by 4 sets of 3 reps with increased weight. As for food, starch will add weight but meat will add muscle so have a meat and potatoes kind of diet.

Five months is plenty of time if you focus on your larger body masses - legs and whatnot. Combine that with a healthy dose of creatine and protein and all should fall in place easily.
