evening folks,
Lurked lightly for some time (I think five or so years now) and after all the hentai I've been watching for those years I figure it's time to ask a question I just want to get some feedback on.
Why should the average person smoke weed?
This isn't about whether it should be legal or not, this is about why someone without real need for it uses it.
From what I can tell, the whole process is to make yourself stupid for a few moments of petty bliss.
What's the state of mind behind using it? I just can't wrap my head around it's use for the people I've specified.
Let me elaborate a little more. I'm not above some pleasures like video games, but these (in the case of any game not made by those guys who did Leisure Suit Larry) can stimulate the mind and it's problem solving abilities (or other more notable processes) i.e. puzzle games, creation games, even RPGs in some instances.
However, pleasures like drinking to get drunk or other general drug use don't totally add up to me. Don't get me wrong, when my friends aren't within 10 miles of me to ridicule me, I'll take an apple margarita in or something like that, maybe a rum and coke when I can't get friends away, but never to the point of the inhibition of my abilities. I just like the taste.
It's taking your body, and making it lesser for the sake of insignificant moments of happiness or forgetting your problems.
Any input is welcomed, I'm not here to tell you you're wrong if you're someone who does this, I just like taking in and understanding other perspectives. Even adopting them wholly or partly at times.

Because it's cool broooo
But really, I don't know. I don't have a problem with people who do it unless they act like stereotypical stoners, which many do.
You look nice today.

Can you elaborate on how it opens up the possibility of creativity?
... I have half a mind to assume you're being sarcastic.
I mean, not to be rude if you are, but from my understanding a person who's high becomes less creative.

There's no real reason, it's just to have fun. Are you telling me you don't do stupid pointless things just for the sake of having fun? Look at something you enjoy doing, I bet you can't find a reason why you like to do it other than "because I like it" or "because it's fun".

The thing is there are plenty of other ways to have fun that won't land you in jail.

I'm dreadfully devoid of stupid things on average. Simplistic at best.
I can justify most of it, in fact.
Gaming: Alternative mind-stimulating process.
Writing/Art: Stimulate creativity.
Debates: More thinking.
Sleeping: Good for me.
Eating: Good for me in the right amounts.
Weed: Debilitating?
I don't see it. I'm sure you're on to something, though. I might just take a moment.

Well, it sounds like you already have some pretty strong feelings against it. I don't think a person like you could understand. Everyone has a different mind, and different surroundings. I'm not going to sit here and try to explain why anyone else uses drugs or alcohol.
My personal reason for smoking weed has to do with liking the feeling. And that's it. The only reason. I don't smoke to be cool, and I don't use any hard drugs. I'm not suffering from depression. I don't have a death wish. Self-destruction is not my motive.
See, I can understand that to a straight edge person, you just see someone who looks stupid. But personally, I like the way it makes me feel. I've always been a very artistic person. Weed opens doors in certain people's minds. My mind is flooded with ideas and concepts for writing music, drawing, painting, or whatever.
I never let it get in the way of my work, my family, or my life. If anything, weed helps. It calms my nerves. I don't deny the simple pleasure in getting high, but I don't just sit there and veg out on the couch.
Thanks to people who could never understand something like that, who want to say it's bad and only losers do it, I think that is where the problems come from. The law, and the narrow-mindedness of some people are just staggering. I am probably the smartest person I know, I'm not going to be modest. I read all the time, write, keep my mind active and sharp. Weed has never dumbed me down. It simply makes any activity better. I can last longer when having sex. I can keep focused longer when I'm performing whatever task.
Now alcohol. That's a different story. There of course is a side of me that just plain likes to blot out certain pains that eat at me. I drink when I want to feel numb. Weed has the opposite effect on me. I feel like, I don't know, I look at things on a deeper level.
But, you know, you just can't change the way someone else perceives you. Because a ton of potheads really are just losers. So here I am with bright red eyes, and a stoned looking grin on my face, I must be a complete and total retard in the assumption of these self-righteous people, who are to busy on their high horse, and to cowardly to look in the mirror, they have to point the finger at everyone else. I can't blame them. It's a self-defense mechanism. I get that. I just don't appreciate when someone assumes I'm the village idiot. I take pride in my abilities.
But you know. It was never about weed. People just like to bitch, and point out faults in others. Some people think smoking weed is a fault, and so it just gives them ammunition. Those same people would probably pick me apart regardless because they have some kind of chip on their shoulder. I really hope you're reading all of this bud, because I'm making all sorts of sense, and you need to get some of this through your head.
I could go on and on depending on the situation why people don't like when other people smoke weed. Sometimes it's a jealousy issue. They think you pay more attention to a plant than them, so they get offended. But with people like that, I've learned to say, hey, that's your problem. Here I am happy as a fucking clam, and YOU'RE the one freaking out, killing my buzz, and depressing the shit out of me. I could say so much more, but I'll just stop here, and see if you even respond. If so, I'll get back to you. I have points to make that I haven't mentioned, but I'm sorry to say, from past experience on this website, you people don't have very high attention spans.
Oh, but I'm supposed to have the low attention span, right?

It's a long discussed arguement, and you're certianly not the first person to mention it on newgrounds. The facts remain pretty indisputable, nobody has died as a direct consequence of cannabis use, it rarely instigates violent or malicious effects on people who use it (in fact this goes against the whole "peace & love" stereotype attached to stoners), and many famous musicians have cited it as an inspiration and influence in their music, ie: The Beatles etc.
To answer your question, should people smoke weed if they are relatively healthy? In my seasoned opinion, yes. It won't turn you into a dickhead, you won't immediately loose all motivation and grow dreadlocks, you might even enjoy it. If we live in a society where you can legally get smashed off alcohol and smoke 20 cigs a day, then I see no logical arguement for why someone can't smoke weed if they want.

Because they enjoy it. That's what it really comes down to, the reasons they enjoy it, whether they feel more creative, relaxed, have more fun, etc. is insignificant. As long as they enjoy doing it, that's a good enough reason imo.

That's pretty closed-minded of you. I can give you plenty of good reasons that I smoke weed. Number one has to be that it makes me more creative. Oh, and how is lowering stress levels stupid? More power to you if you can lower your stress levels, am I right? Weed also has a very good way of making me see things more clearly. Read my other post, you'll get a better idea of where I'm coming from.
I think weed just gets a bad rap because of what it makes you LOOK like. Haven't any of us learned not to judge a book by it's cover? You can't judge a person entirely based on red eyes. I mean you can, but you'll be wrong most of the time. Why let your prejudice completely blind you to the fact that you could have made a really good friend if you could just look passed something as trivial as how they choose to go about their business. I get high. I'm not a murderer. I don't even like to start shit. I don't cause problems for anyone, I consider myself to have a decent sense of humor, and I have a quality that seems to be lacking in so much of the population today. I give respect where respect is due. I give people the benefit of the doubt. I'm really good with children. I have a family that I love and support. I try my best to be a good man, a good husbandm, and a good father.
And because I enjoy getting high... that makes me stupid? I don't think so. I think it's more of a thing that other people can be intolerant of something they don't understand. It just boils down to ignorance and prejudice if you can't get to know someone before you start calling them names. I have never understood why people are so quick to judge before getting all the facts, or actually getting to know someone.

Sorry if it looks like I haven't been getting back to the lot of some of you guys, I'm new to these heavier wait times. (Used to the 3-10 minutes on other forums.)
I've contacted a few of you in messages, you obviously know who you are.
Moving on to the next up!
So, enjoyment is a reason why someone should do something?
If I found enjoyment out of clubbing seals in the seal clubbers club, should I be allowed to do that because I enjoy it?
Obviously someone who smokes weed, hopefully, doesn't just go clubbing animals. The idea stands though. Is enjoyment justification to do something?

Dude, I hope you realize that you're just creating an unfair comparison. That's the same tactic people use when arguing against homosexuality, "If you condone two men having sex then you must condone people having sex with farm animals!". If you can't see the difference between smoking some weed and killing innocent animals then I can't help you.

Woah woah, it was a hell of a comparison, I know, but no one said anything about killing the seals. That'd be insanity. (It was a poor attempt and humor, avoid it if you'd like.)

No, but I never said enjoyment was justification for clubbing seals, I said enjoyment was justification for smoking weed. Just because enjoyment is justification for committing one specific act does not mean it has to be justification for all acts.

Weed can be a life ruiner. Not because it is addictive. Think about it, it's probably the one thing in life that takes up a lot of your time, has no real value, and gives you absolutely no skill in anything whatsoever. Even video games can increase your hand-eye coordination. Weed has absolutely no value.

Enjoyment without harming anyone is justification imo. Smoking weed for enjoyment seems justified, clubbing seals involves a victim so it's not.

Alright, so smoking weed is justified because it's a pleasure (where you don't club seals).
Now, would you say the positives outweigh the negatives of it? Or do you value some things that someone above me, and obviously several others in the past, like the creativity and calming it offers?
The question isn't actually whether it's right or wrong from the original post, it's why do it.
The positives thus far are calmed nerves, which I won't disagree with. I think it can calm a person down. Creativity I'm not certain about, I do prefer science over word-of-mouth sometimes. I sincerely don't trust the first things that pop up on google for topics like this though.
The cons are obvious and ones I'm sure you're aware of, such as weight gain from the well-known munchies, something that does have the ability to be controlled, and lung-cancer or long-term harm to the brain. The cases for that long-term harm are generally 5-10 years of use, though. My cousin, who I love to death, would be an example of this long-term problem with weed.
Back to the point though, do you think the positives outweigh the negatives, and so it's fine to do it?

That's something that's going to vary from person to person, depending on their subjective thoughts on how much weight each pro & con holds and their own personal experience with weed. Some people get paranoid when smoking it, some have trouble breathing, some just may not care for the high/taste/smell, in their cases, the cons are probably going to outweigh the pros.
For others, they may see the pros as outweighing the cons in their case. It's not going to be for everybody, and there are plenty of factors that can effect whether or not I would say it's fine or not fine, but not everybody is going to be faced with the same factors, so it's best to judge it by a case to case basis.

If you did some actually scientific research you would find that all the cons you list have been disprove scientifically (more scientific then just googling it). What you seem to be asking is to justify the use of marijuana, my justification is I LIKE IT, why did I first use it, I was curious. That is my justification, but you aren't really looking for that, you are looking for something to use to criticize and build you up on your little pedestal, but the plan simple fact is a hundred years from now we'll both be dead and no one will remember you any more then they remember me.

I'll take that. Until I get around to looking into the rare but lovable unbiased results for it's pros and negatives, I'll take it case to case.
There are sine things that feel a little far fetched, but I'll let the science be it's proof or demise.
I have seen one case of a guy being awesome, and high at the same time. (He just laughs at all my shitty jokes rather than pity laugh). I myself just slow down, along with most of the people I see around me. Maybe there is an expansive aspect to it, but this might also raise some questions like whether these increases in performance don't have any more reason to be used than steroids.
Thanks for your responses. I'm a little tired though, I'll probably check this again tomorrow, but a PM is probably more effective. Thanks again guys

Mmm, before I go I just have to get to this. Too tempting.
You're using generalizations and assumptions to make an argument.
Obviously people won't remember me past my death who weren't close enough to me to be there in the first place. Does this mean I shouldn't care about topics at all an pursue them? I won't leave this to speculation, the answer is no.
Two cases of people doesn't really completely disprove anything. Humans can vary notably from person to person as far as health requirements. I did get to read that article a while ago and found it interesting, but did you ever consider the obvious bias of the anti-weed side could equally be used on the pro side?
Internet science generally has bias, just a rule-of-the-thumb.
