I'm sorry, I seem to see a lack of Doom and Quake in your post OP.

Serious Sam 3 is the new Doom.
I would rather like a new Battlefront, though.

Lag? Check.
Server issues at release? Check.
Unbalanced weapons? Check.
Glitches? Check.
Insultingly short campaign? Check.
They seem about equal, to me.
OT: They need a new Battlefront. But I worry that by this point too much has changed in the industry: modern games seem to be focused on multiplayer and graphics, but that wasn't really what made Battlefront fun.
America's Army at one point in its history was (and at that point) is still the best FPS I've ever played.

oh man, I didn't like that game at all.
also Starsiege Tribes imo is one of the best fps
Although, like most games released, your theoretical shooter would likely result in being a better game than Call of Duty, I doubt it'd sell anywhere near as well. The more tactical (albeit only slightly) feel of Battlefield games doesn't sell as well, and adding elements of Star Wars in would only turn away the large portion of the FPS market whom discount elements of games that are non-realistic - and no, that's not just a stereotype, that exact reasoning was used when discussing Quake with a CoD fan a few weeks ago.
If this thread is a well hidden query as to what people believe is the best FPS of all time, as for influence on videogaming as a whole goes I think DooM takes the cake, in addition to IMO having one of the best mod communities ever. TF2 wins my personal favourite just as I love class-based games and it is one of the few class-based games where the classes are that important, and it has great character and atmosphere. BF2 is the FPS which I'm playing the most at the moment and I quite like it, although 1942 is likely a better game, 2 just feels more polished and complete, although the gameplay as a whole just doesn't feel quite as good and it seems to have less map variety. Gulf of Oman is all I need to keep me happy, though.
I'm a fan of the older FPS games, specifically games like Doom and Quake. My all-time favorite shooter is Doom. It's simple, fast-paced, and has a great atmosphere for levels and monsters. I ain't that attached to the past to not like modern-day shooters. I love Halo: Combat Evolved on the PC as well as the suite of Medal of Honor games. Dunno what it is about WWII shooters, but I love 'em.
To be frank, I dunno what is keeping me from liking modern war games. I'm not a fan of Call of Duty 4 and just can't get into it, though I heavily enjoyed Modern Warfare 3. It's my favorite Call of Duty after the first two games (which were, ironically, WWII games which I have a huge bias for).
Battlefront III and Republic Commando 2 are the heroes that the industry deserves.
Although I can't help but think that they'd turn out horribly given the current state of FPSs.
Halo 1. I've beaten it at least ten times as many times as I've beaten any other game. Just doesn't get old. Shooting enemies just doesn't feel the same in any other shooter. Even though it's ten years old, everything feels so fleshed out and interactive. The small variety of enemies they have are enough to present a unique challenge in every battle you go to. It also handles difficulty modes very well. For Legendary mode they don't just throw you in a nearly impossible situation where luck and trial and error are you only way to get through (MW2, Halo 2, etc.). The battles reward you for planning ahead and thinking on your feet.
I know people are just gonna read Halo and automatically say "Halo is overrated!" but I don't care. Halo is a groundbreaking game that revolutionized the shooter genre, popularized console shooters and saved the Xbox. It deserves the credit it gets. CoD fanboys bash Halo all the time without realizing that CoD uses Halo's winning FPS formula and wouldn't exist without it.

I loved the storyline to that! If they just had a smoother engine, it would be great!

Barbie games are infinitely better than Call of Duty.

They would fuck it up.

This. Timesplitters 2 offered so much variety, so many unlocks, and even the option of making your own maps (although I would love for them to develop that further in future games).
It was also the only game I knew that could be seriously themed at one moment, and then go completely apeshit in insanity the next.

How do you even make an interesting FPS? Graphics and gun selection would be the only things not overlooked by the FPS's main fanbase.

It's sad that each new CoD game makes massive amounts of money when all they do is update the graphics and add a few guns and perks while keeping the core gameplay unchanged.

Fixed.

Exactly what I've been saying for years. It's funny when people call Halo a "generic fps" when they don't realize it invented many of those "generic" conventions.
CoD4: MW was (ironically) something exhilarating and refreshing when it first came out. I still would rank the "Shock and Awe" scene as one of my favorite moments in video game history. Sadly, it seems Activision has milked the cash cow and drove Infinity Ward and their franchise into the ground.
Battlefront II is still one of my favorite games ever... there's not much to be said about how awesome it is.
Half-Life 2 is still incredible in its richness and detail... Now if they'd just fucking make Episode 3/Half-life 3 already. <3 you anyway Valve :D
Doom and Quake are... Doom and Quake. They're fun, fast and wicked to this day.
Team Fortress 2 has some of the most addicting multiplayer ever to grace videogames. It's so lovingly polished too. Another high-five for Valve.
I haven't played SS3 yet, but Serious Sam TFE/TSE were probably the first FPS's that I ever played (popping Kleer since I was 8, bitches!). Still excellent for their old-school charm, pulse-pounding action and corny one-liners.
The actual gunplay in Chronicles of Riddick: Butcher Bay was a bit lackluster, but the way stealth and action is intertwined in this game still serves as great example of stellar game design.
On the same note as Serious Sam, Painkiller has always been fucking fantastic just for being so brutal. Satan spawn, lots of gore, badass weapons, tons of variety and many expansions. Get it on Steam, it's definitely worth the money.
Bioshock wins for how purely immersive the game is. I still get shudders when I hear a Spider Splicer. Can't wait for Bioshock Infinite.
I have fond memories of the first Turok for it's massive, open-ended level designs with multiple paths and explorable side areas. Something quite different for its time.
Deus Ex. I could write essays on Deus Ex. How about instead you go play it.
I think CoD4 was a pretty good game. It wasn't the most revolutionary game ever but it had it had a unique fast paced style to it. I thought it became a little overrated because the multiplayer was a little shallow but overall, it was a good game. But since then they've milked the series by re-releasing the same game over and over with slight graphical improvements, and a few flashy new weapons and perks. It's become the most massively overrated shooter series of all time. No innovation. Just milking the series and getting a metric fuckton of money.
And to the guy who changed my Halo post to Half Life, everything I said about Halo is true so you don't need to be a fanboy and discredit Halo to promote Halo Life. They're both great influential games. Half Life was one of my first shooters. I didn't even know what it was at the time. All I knew is that I would walking around with a crowbar and smashing stuff until they burst into yellow slime. I really want to play it again because it was a great game (even if I was like 10 and the time). Still, Halo has a huge legacy and almost all modern shooters and influenced by it. It's a great game and people need to stop bashing the series.

To be honest, Halo is my favorite (yeah I know many of you like Battlefield and CoD better but I haven't played Battlefield and I like Halo better than CoD). I started with with Battlefront Renegade Squadron (actually Battlefront 1 or 2 on Xbox, but I only played it like once at my friend's house, so yeah) though, and I was addicted. It has great online multiplayer (it is the best part) but has too many hackers. Even the campaign was good. A Star Wars Battlefront 3 would be awesome (technically 5, but whatever). I still play it and got the prequel. I guess it would be best on a console (Xbox 360, PS3) or PC or MAC because of the graphics. What if Bungie, 343 Industries, Infinity Ward, Treyarch, LucasArts and DICE did something together? Don't think it would happen. Oh well, that is all. For now, we have to wait (sadly).
There are lots of games that aren't made or aren't being made that would be awesome, and that is one of them.
