*I rather tip the cook.* 2011-12-07 10:25:24 Reply

Alright so on my cooking shift last night I had the pleasure of dealing with a very bitchy waitress. Needless to say almost all her tables complained about her, yet somehow a bunch of them left tips. Near closing I just happened to hear a customer chew her out about her shitty service and the next part caught me by surprise. The guy pulled out a $10 and slapped it in her hand and said "I rather tip the cook. Go give this to him!" She gave it to me and had a embarrassed look on her face. After the guy left she right away started to call her friends and starting crying about it.

Well deserved or not?

Also another question. Why don't more people tip the cooks? We do all the work yet never get anything from it. Not even a thank you.

That....was slightly hilarious.

My brother in law is a cook at a bar. He usually gets a few bucks directly from people. He made them win best bar burger in Wisconsin 3 years in a row, and 2nd last year.

Well.

Shit.

Neither of you should be tipped. The employer has to pay your wages, not the customers, who pay for goods and service.

Dude if that would have happened where I worked, she would be fired in a heartbeat. You really have to be a complete dirt bag to piss somebody off that bad.

As to your last comment: You get paid an hourly wage, servers don't. We mainly make money from tips. Also, most people are dumb and that thought probably never crosses their mind.

Yes, well deserved and well acted out by the customer. I wonder why she was even hired in the first place if she has so poor (more like shitty) services skills.

Most cooks get paid enough without the need of tips.

Your work place seems off. The servers I work with get paid an hourly wage and actually make more then the cooks do.

I has to do with three most likely factors.

1. You as a cook get paid more for doing a "more important work effort" and can manage on your wage, waitress can not.

2. Services worker are doing a menial work task as in this case bringing your food to the table, you can easily yourself do it, but someone else did it, hooray for comfort here's a few extra bucks.

3. Culture, you just supposed to we been told.

Technically we do get paid hourly, a whopping $2.13 an hour. This is supposed to cover "Social Security", taxes, Medicare, e.t.c. That being said, I still make more than most of the kitchen crew with the exception of the grill guys.

I see that you live in Canada. You probably have a much different work environment and pay system than down here in Louisiana.

Here is a US government database of minimum wage and tip credit laws by state

There are several states that don't have any such "tip credit" rule. You are paid minimum wage, regardless of tips.

My brother is a chef and gets a few tips from time to time. Mostly it is thanks though they'll receive if a customer wishes to well.. thank them. I don't know why more people don't tip the chefs either. Its a hard job they do.

I remember once my brother received a letter from an American girl who he had been catering to the previous week while she stayed where he works. She thanked him for meeting her dietary needs and yet making the food the most delicious she'd ever tasted. He was quite emotion reading that really and it made the job worthwhile for him.

People, tip your chefs and your cab drivers!

Don't cooks get paid a decent wage better than waitstaff?

I feel kinda bad for her, she must have been having a really bad day. It shouldn't have affected her work but if she actually cried afterwards she must have been going through something outside of work.

In Illinois I was paid IL minimum of $8.25, then I got a dollar raise to $9.25. I moved out here to Colorado and am now earning a whopping $3.75 more an hour at $13 per hour.

Very few times I received tips, because I'm paid better than waitstaff. I don't know why it keeps being perpetuated in this society, but there are days servers can earn a lot more than I can with tips versus my hourly wage. Of course that means we're usually super busy if that's the case.

I don't need tips is what I'm saying, and nor do most cooks/chefs. We're usually on duty for 40-50 hours a week, so it adds up big time.

Well waitresses and waiters depend on tips as their pay. Though I think it is nice to show your respect for the cooks though, as they are doing their best.

Well aren't cooks paid, you know, at least minimum wage? Where as waiters are paid very low amounts and most of their money comes from the tips.

I think the chef/cook are supposed to be humble -- they work behind the scenes, so merely "complimenting" the chef or such should be enough.

At least, that's how my mind sees it. I could be completely and horribly wrong.

Waiter's are guaranteed to be payed at least minimum wage. An example, If minimum wage is 8.00. but the waiter gets paid 3.50. By the end of the week, if the waiters wage plus tips times the hours they work does not equal to the 8.00 times the hours they work, the waiters employer has to cover what they didn't make.

The reason their wage is so low is because of tips and so it will be fair to the other employees.

I would rather pay the cook, instead of the waiter. Unless the waiter did one hell of a job.
