Windows 8 Dev Preview 2011-11-17 07:24:04 Reply

I recently got it running on a test system. It's actually pretty nice... I was skeptical at first because of the use of live tiles instead of the start menu we all know and love, but I could actually get used to it. Right now it looks like they just slapped an enhanced shell prototype on Windows 7 and bumped the version number, because someone somewhere said they redesigned the kernel and that applications designed for previous versions of windows wouldn't work right unless put in a VM running an older version of windows.

Plus, it can actually run a real browser! Though Firefox's eligibility for that title is rapidly decreasing... Next task: run Chrome on it!

It also has the IE 10 Dev Preview pre installed. I don't know where I got the Windows 8 iso, i just know that it's pretty promising.

I will tell you one thing:
No native apps.

That's right, no video games in Metro. You WILL have to use the classic mode to get any kind of performance.

And Metro is going to be appstore only, so have fun while Microsoft turns your PC into a giant iPad.

Wow, what a shitty concept. So I'm guessing Microsoft settled on Windows 8 Handicapped for their cheapest version of the OS?

I'm quite content with latest release of Xubuntu. I only use Win 7 for particular circumstances.
