questions regarding record labels Nov. 15th, 2011 @ 11:19 PM Reply

alright, i'm gonna start looking into finding a record label to sign me, but first i need some questions answered:

1) i never make people pay for my songs. will i have to start doing that if i get signed?

2) will i have to stick to a specific genre if i get signed?

3) will being signed fuck me over in any way?

thank you for your time

If you release a single or album then obviously they will have to pay.

2) will i have to stick to a specific genre if i get signed?

There's places like Planet Dog and 1605 I think who are all Electronica and Techno type music.

3) will being signed fuck me over in any way?

Can't answer that sorry.

thank you for your time

In regards to having listeners pay for your songs, some label who tried to sign me let the customer choose how much to pay for the tracks (including not paying at all). I thought it was an interesting idea, but they were an unknown label so I decided against it.

If you're releasing your stuff for free, why do you really need a label in the first place? I'll give you the answer - you don't. If you're willing to put some time and effort into it, you can find ways of promoting your own music, and it won't cost you much (if anything).

2) will i have to stick to a specific genre if i get signed?

Depends on the label. Chances are, they're not going to give you all that much creative freedom - by that, I mean, if they sign you for being a dubstep artist that sounds like Skrillex, they're going to expect you to release dubstep songs that sound like Skrillex.

3) will being signed fuck me over in any way?

Short answer? Yes.

Just as a note... for my replies, I will be assuming you are asking about being signed to a major label.

If you get signed to a major label, you will be very restricted in what you can release for free... Labels sign artists they think can make them money, not artists they think can be charitable.

2) will i have to stick to a specific genre if i get signed?

Likely, yes. You can't sign on to a trance label (For example) and start making dubstep, you'll get punted to the curb.

3) will being signed fuck me over in any way?

If you want to keep your creative freedom, yes. If you want to make money, yes (Labels will be soaking up all the money you make until you start making more than they spend on you). If you want more exposure... no.

Well theres always small underground netlabels, they dont charge anything usually, so you can still release your albums for free.
