Hanna Barbera sure changed their tune later on.
I wonder if it was just a money and public image thing. I'd imagine that both Winston and the anti-smoking firms paid Hanna Barbera pretty good money to use their trademarked and recognized characters to appeal to a broad audience that included children.

Yeah, cigarette advertisements were very, VERY common back in those days. The tobacco companies sponsored many shows and were practically loved in those days when people were oblivious to the detrimental health effects of tobacco smoke. Eventually, Congress outlawed tobacco advertising on TV and radio(And eventually newspapers, I think) in 1971....
....History is amazing, isn't it?

In those days, cigarettes sponsered everything they could, and this was before laws were made about what exactly those companies can sponser.
You make it sound like a horrible thing but thats just how things were in the past.

That doesn't mean that it wasn't horrible, though.

There's really no such thing as making "too much" money, as long as no one is being exploited. What's wrong with making enormous profits if no one is getting hurt?
Of course, energy companies and oil tycoons are exploiting people(Or things, like the environment, if you want to say that) to make such profits, which is wrong.
I just want to emphasize my point that as long as no one or no thing is harmed or exploited in any way, it's not logical to say that a person(s) or an organization(s) is making "too much money."
Also, in case you don't already know, oil companies get subsidies in the U.S. Ridiculous, isn't it? I find it appalling as an ardent believer in the power of capitalism.

I respect your conclusion, I hope you grant me the same as I can't quite agree with you. People always get hurt when money is involved.

I honestly have no idea what you just said.
What I meant to say really;
Everything in the past is terrible by todays standards. Doesn't make it SO bad back then, just means we have different principles now. I can think of dozens of things that were happening back then that was worse and things happening now that are worst. The fact is, cigarette companies cannot get advertising in most countries. Its banned for most forms of tobacco to get advertising in this way, so why do we need to focus on the past?
The Flinestones is still awesome.

I do respect your beliefs as well.

Essentially, I meant to say that it's a violation of the principles of capitalism for a company to receive government subsidies, especially when these businesses are already pulling in massive profits.

I had to google define the word 'subsidy', I'm just dumb like that and honestly try to keep away from business talk and stuff like 'capitalism vs socialism vs communism'. It all just confuses my mind and I prefer not to get worked up over these things. I try to anyway. Hard when this kind of stuff comes to light. Very very naughty really.
I see your point and I agree.
And I think it was before people knew the actual evils and health problems that can be cause by smoking cigarettes.
I have never seen the show, lol. I guess it's my loss.
Yabba-dabba-oh my! D:
back then Cigarettes were not seen as bad, and they didnt know about all the diseases it could cause.
Flintstoners? Don't you mean Flintstone's? Sounds like they smoked more than cigarettes by your thread title, lol.

Alcohol and Tobacco were featured heavily in kid's cartoons of the 40s-60s. Probably because back then the effects of tobacco weren't as widely known or published, and the cartoons weren't only meant for children.
Today, cartoons are specifically marketed toward children.(with the exception of fox, and adult swim) So any references toward violence, substance use/abuse, and such is prohibited. Back in the good ol' days of animation, however, it was all in good ol' fashioned fun. :D
it was a cartoon parody of the honeymooners... so yeah... duh

Back in those days smoking wasn't known to be such a health hazard and it is one of those few things that was actually less taboo back in the day than it is now. Back in those days EVERYONE smoked.

Well, of course the Flintstones smoked! It was back in the Stone Age where people had no idea that smoking was bad for you! As I said earlier, people probably knew that smoking was bad around 500 years ago or so, but they definitley had no idea of it in the times of the Flintstones. Maybe the humans there evolved the ability to breathe the smoky air, but the dinosaurs didn't, so the humans outlived them.

It was made when smoking was more popular back in the 50's or something. I wouldn't be surprised.
The Flintstones smoked.... and now where are they? DEAD! They're DEAD!

Lolz, humans and dinosaurs never lived at the same time. Humans came around millions of years afterward. In fact, most mammals alive at the time of the dinosaurs were tiny, mouse-sized animals.
Well those were certainly different times
