4.07 / 5.00 13,902 ViewsAlright, back at the beginning of August, I started a thread on here hoping to update regularly as I custom painted a guitar for a friend. Alas, life came along and kicked me in the balls with such bone shattering force, that I failed to paint regularly and the thread died a sad, lonely death.
This brings us to the now. I've been doing my best to find time between school and work to paint, and I've almost finished the back. This time, updates will absolutely be on a regular basis. I'm going to shoot for weekly updates as I progress on this.
Comments and critiques are welcome.

You've got a few white spots here and there. Get a really fine brush and fix those up ;)

I've got some color blocking on the front, but no real detail yet. I'm hoping to finally finish the back this week.
Really cool project. What kind of paint is that? How sturdy is it once dry? Will it actually be playable or if someone gets a bit too rough with it will they flake the paint off?

i imagine that he'll put a finish on it so that the paint won't come off when it's played.
You should post a link to a tutorial showing how to do this properly though, I've always wondered how to do this and I kinda want to paint my guitar :) I just want to make sure I know how first.

They guy I'm painting it for built all the internal components himself. He's going to be using a translucent pick guard/ back plate and absolutely intends to play this thing when it's finished.
About the process. The first thing I did was sand the body with a sheet of medium tooth sandpaper. After smoothing the body, I put down a base coat of what is essentially white, latex housepaint. After i had a solid, dry coat, I sanded it with a lighter sandpaper to smooth out any lumps and drips.
The sketch-work was done with what i believe was an 2H pencil, but it may have been softer lead. I recommend a slightly hard lead because you lines will be a bit fainter, making it easier to paint over them. I'm using Daniel Smith acrylics for the color. I'm not too big on buying pre-made colors, so I mix all my colors from basic pigments.
