I know that the general rule is that you should ignore trolls, but how many of you ignore that and engage them anyways, even when its obvious that they are trolling?

umm... it depends on whether there is any sign of intelligence. if he makes a thread with the title "T__ F____ is fxxking ___", then i will just ignore him because he is both unfunny and dumb.

otherwise, i will respond to him, either sarcastically, or in an asshole manner, i.e. feeding the troll.

i have no idea how many people reply to trolls here. let's take a vote.

I am just a random user from a set of measure zero and thus am negligible. Or to put it another way, a worthless piece of shit.

I always try to derail the thread since I've seen that genuinely bother trolls before.

I avoid engaging trolls. It simply does not accomplish anything.

That being said, there are very few good trolls on Newgrounds. Trolls aren't entirely one large group Trolls can be classified. It's down to a science. Trollology, I'll call it.

On the Classification of Trolls: First Draft

Class 0:
Not a troll. Uninformed and ignorant posters fall into this category. Will often justify their posts by claiming that they are "just trolling", but in reality they're trying to regain lost reputation.

Class 1:
The troll is extremely obvious and not even slightly funny. There is no skill in this.

Class 2:
The troll is fairly obvious, but enough to incite a chuckle or two from a few people. They often rely on copypasta.

Class 3:
The troll is purposefully obvious and uses this to their advantage. This is often good-natured trolling.

Class 4:
True trolls. The "not sure if troll" zone. These trolls are not quite so obvious and attention to what they are saying is required to find out they are a troll. If everyone can tell right away that they are a troll then they belong in Class 2. These trolls often make more elaborate posts and don't show their motives readily.

Class 5:
Master trolls. The not even suspecting trolling zone. These trolls are masters of the trolling art. They only give the subtlest of hints or no hints at all. If they're doing it right then even after considering the facts, whether or not they are trolling will be a tough call to make.

The trolls that deserve to be banned on sight are Class 0 to Class 2. Class 0 and Class 1 also usually fall under the classification of spammer and Class 1 and Class 2 because of the minimal effort they involve.

There can be debate on Class 3 to Class 5. Class 3 is often meant to be all in good fun and not meant to deceive anyone. Class 4 represents a group of trolls who put much more effort into their work and treat trolling as the art-form that it is. Class 5 trolls are endangered and make up a very small number of trolls who have mastered this ancient art.

Unfortunally class 0-2 trolls make fine trolling seem very annoying.

I enjoy arguing just for the sake of arguing, so generally I'll engage a troll even if it's very obvious they're just being an asshole.

Even when I know someone's trying to troll me, I treat their posts as I would anyone else's and analyze them, pointing out flaws and disagreeing with them.

It's almost impossible for anyone to troll me. I suppose that one of the best ways to deal with trolls is to pretend as if they're being serious but without getting angered by seeing their posts.

I believe the definition of a troll is someone who bears a conflicting perspective on one topic compared to the gullible majority. Therefore the majority lashes out in an attempt to "shun" him. Mind you, I'm not referring to trolls who just post offensive things aimlessly, but the ones who are very sophisticated and a hint of sarcasm whenever they decide to troll someone.

I'm not sure but I love the feeling whenever you troll someone. As it is very satisfying to know that some people on this world take the internet way too seriously, therefore causing them pain and anger.

Is it trolling if you're just doing it to get an obvious reaction, and don't care if people think you're an idiot?
