Finding the right voice 2011-10-18 11:19:04 Reply

I tried finding posts about tips on choosing the right voice actor/actress. And I failed. So, here I go.

What are the things you have to consider before choosing voices?

I'm thinking that it is required of me to define the cartoon characters and stuff which can help, but how is this effective to what extend?

I don't really have anymore questions, because I don't know what I...don't know. So, help me out please?

By the way, is there like an advisor or something you can relate to about this? Like a person who knows how to run through auditions and stuff. Because I don' think I'm cut out for that.

Thanks for reading!

I'm not sure about the advisor or anything but the way i think i would go about getting a voice actor if i needed on would be to try say a sample group and get them to do a line or two and see how clear the recording is and if the voices stick to the character you have in mind. I mean obviously if you are serious about the animation an old man wouldnt sound like a young child unless you wanted him to. So i think it would ave to be what fits the characters the best. I hope this has made since considering i'm trying to get into voice acting on here but im still awaiting approval but i plan on gettin a few parts when im able to.

Usually when you write you get an idea of how the character would sound like, take that idea and flesh it out when posting in the "voice actor wanted" thread, like this:

"Need one voice-actor for a middle aged man, the character speaks with authority and seriousness, he has a lower-register voice and speaks quite clearly."

This is from the top of my head, but try to really flesh out the idea.
Setting the standard for quality is also recommended, like this:

"Please have a good mic and some background in voice acting"

it would also help if you posted a character sketch so the voice actors can get an understanding of him.

Give a brief summary of the character's personality and role within the story. If they're a supporting character, knowing how they relate to the main character can be very important. When describing their voice and/or personality it can help to compare them to a preexisting character or real person, but isn't necessary.

Provide at least 4 lines for actors to record an audition with. You can even provide an excerpt of a whole scene, to give the actor a full idea of what's going on, and what the character is responding to.

Deadlines are crucial. Usually between a week or two is good. A lot of actors work on several projects at once and need deadlines to help them prioritize.

To reach a larger talent pool, try posting at the Voice Acting Club and Voice Acting Alliance forums as well.
