for a less mainstream game you could try Gex for the PS1.
not many people have played it but it does have somewhat of a cult following that will do absurd things to keep the series alive in some spiritual form.

This is really good advice, you may have helped allot, because im actually running into this kind of blindly. OMG gex...i loved that game, i forgot all about it. Thats so going on my list
