I know this sounds pretty ridiculous, but it's true; only a little over a year ago did I take an interest in video games. That being said, I'm currently a junior in high school, and since I didn't play video games much as a kid, I find it hard to keep up with both the classics and new releases.
At least your playing the classics...
Most new gamers write them off as "Grafix sux, lol".

You should try Half Life 1 and Half Life 2, they are the games that got me into the Fps genre and kind of set the standard for great fps games for me personally.
You should also try out the Rpg genre too, a lot of games in that genre to try, some old and some new

This, i think Half-Life 1 is the best fps game ever, and it has the only multiplayer gameplay that's worth playing, i would recommend to play Half-Life 1 first before Half-Life 2.
there's also Mafia : the city of lost heaven , i would say it's the best shooter game ever, even at today's standards, and i think it had the best story for a shooter game (if you want it get it on pc, the xbox and ps2 ports suck).

That's a lot of games.

I pretty much have full coverage of every game I'll ever need to play. The problem's finding time to do it.
It is quite the opposite for me. I haven't played a new game for quite some time, apart from the Path of Exile beta, which is more than enough to keep me entertained, apparently. But I am looking forward to the new Professor Layton game.
