Yeah, 'cause that's what I said right? Every time anyone says his full name, they do it because they're racist. I'm sure glad the world is completely black and white and there's absolutely no nuance to anything.

well you can't always assume someone is being racist. Hell, I've heard people say "George W. Bush" or even just "Dubya" does it mean they hate bush? not necessarily.

Personally, I don't think Barack Hussein Obama is an evil malignant president that TRYING to destroy the nation... I just think he got in over his head. I personally think Barack Hussein Obama should have stayed in the senate for a term or two then ran for governor for a term or two, then went for presidency. That way, Barack Hussein Obama would have had an idea about what he was up against and would have been a much more effective president.

ALSO!

my favorite presidential joke... so far

well you can't always assume someone is being racist.

Which is exactly what I just said.

Hell, I've heard people say "George W. Bush" or even just "Dubya" does it mean they hate bush? not necessarily.

Those are some very poor examples, as using Bush's middle initial was necessary to differentiate him from his father George H.W. Bush (who up until the 2000 election had been known simply as "George Bush"), and "Dubya" is an amiable nickname.

The proper comparison would be someone calling him by his full name, Geroge Walker Bush, which almost NEVER happened. You can dance around the issue all you want, but 99 out of 100 times, when someone refers to the President as Barack Hussein Obama while they're leveling harsh criticism towards him, they're trying to paint him as an "other", a scary muslim foreigner not to be trusted.

Personally, I don't think Barack Hussein Obama is an evil malignant president that TRYING to destroy the nation... I just think he got in over his head. Oh, sweet, if you hadn't used his middle name to identify him there I wouldn't have known which Barack Obama you were referring to. You know, since there are so many people named Barack Obama. The only issue I have is that you might want to refer to him as Barack Hussein Obama II, just so we don't get him confused with his father.

So I take it you're going to start referring to the VP as Joseph Robinette Biden now, right? After all, it IS his full name. You know what, from now on, you should start referring to EVERYONE by their full name, all the time. Anything short of that would be inconsistent, and I rue the day that a conservative reveals himself to be a hypocrite.

Bullshit. It was a nickname that was used pejoratively and to deride him, and you know it.

Meh Joseph Robinette (really? ROBINETTE? HAHAHAHAH!!) Biden to me is almost irrelevant.

Of course, Barack Hussein Obama is probably shittin his britches that a conservative black man, Herman Cain (does he even HAVE a middle name? I can't find it anywhere) might be the one running against him next year. he better bring out his best character assassins to try and stop him from getting the nomination or else Obama might lose a piece of the working black vote, given that working class blacks are getting pissed off about the lack of jobs. (as opposed to the welfare chasers of all races who sit back and laugh at the working stiffs who struggle to make ends meet)

the best presidential joke ever though, is that if Herman Cain does get the nomination, racists on BOTH sides will be confused as hell as to who to vote for.

White racist: I hate them damn black people... but I have to choose between 2 black people... GAAH!
Black Racist: uhh, black people on BOTH sides? How did THAT happen? No whitey to vote against?

You think that's funny? I wonder what will happen to all the Obama supporters who like to play the race card ad-hominem against Obama opponents. Their poor heads will explode, just from the inability to vent all the bullshit and hot air they like to spew.

Oh, but of course. No one would ever use Obama's middle name in a racists or xenophobic manner.

Except for rednecks.

You find me a similar video of someone railing against George "WALKER" Bush, or John "SIDNEY" McCain, and I'll grant you that you're not as stupid as you sound.

And what's more, you seem to be the only one here even bothered by it.

Get your panties out of a wad.

So you're telling me that out of the 3 people that have responded to my comment in this thread, ALL 3 OF THEM didn't seem to think that constantly emphasising that the Presidents middle name is the same as a muslim dictator was in the least bit questionable.

That's 100%!

Well, I'm not one to argue with overwhelming evidence like that, so I guess you win this one.

At 11/12/11 12:03 PM, Angry-Hatter wrote: and "Dubya" is an amiable nickname.
Bullshit. It was a nickname that was used pejoratively and to deride him, and you know it.

No, you see, unlike you, I don't go around saying things that I know to be blatantly untrue. So while I know of a whole lot of people who used "Dubya" as a term of derision, I know of an equal amount of people who used the moniker in a positive way.

In any case, my point isn't that people didn't make fun of Bush's name, because they most certainly did. But there is a difference between using a nickname, and repeating someone's full name over and over.

But maybe I'm the stupid one, and I just don't get it for some reason, so why don't you explain it to me.

Why is it that critics of President Obama commonly make reference to his middle name, while critics of say, Speaker Boehner, Senate Minority Leader McConnell, or Vice President Biden, almost never make reference to their middle names? I'm curious as to what your answer might be.

White racist: I hate them damn black people... but I have to choose between 2 black people... GAAH!

No, it's going to be more like,

Closeted white racists: Woah, look at that guy who keeps saying all the things that I've been DYING to say out loud for ages but haven't out of fear of being labeled as racist. Yeah! Fuck those liberal plantation n*****s. See, I'm not racist! This one black guy agrees with me! CAIN 2012!

Right, Angry-Hatter?

You seem to have me confused with an Obama supporter. It's sucks that I'm forced to defend the President, but most of the criticism leveled towards him is SO batshit crazy that I don't really have much of a choice. Believe me, Barack Obama is the last person I'd like to see as President, unless you count the looney tunes currently competing for the republican nomination, in which case he just barely gets my endorsement.

Won't happen. You can't be racist against white people, remember?

That's what makes this whole "dogwhistle racism" thing stupid to me, because it only applies to President Obama. It not a concept that can be universally applied to all political candidates or figures, just him, and I sincerely doubt it was coined or applied before him.

So you're telling me

I'm telling you that you're making an issue out of something that was pretty well a non-issue that any reasonable individual would give two shits less about, because you have nothing else to do but sit around and bitch.

No, you see, unlike you, I don't go around saying things that I know to be blatantly untrue.

"Blatantly untrue?" Before you posted it, I had never heard the term "dogwhistle racism" or how it applied to this situation, and even then, I still think it's a stupid concept that was coined by overly sensitive people looking for another way to play the race card for lack of an actual argument.

At 11/12/11 08:46 PM, Angry-Hatter wrote: You seem to have me confused with an Obama supporter.

Gee, I wonder why that is? This whole double-response to what I said seems to be really show how little you care for Obama, much less this whole shitfit you've been throwing about somebody using his middle name.

What criticism have I made against the president that would cause you to rail so hard against me?

Oh, yeah, I linked to a video made by somebody who used Obama's whole name. I am such a bat-shit crazy, stupid, racist asshole, aren't I? 'Scuse me whilst me and my sister-wife go out on my front porch and sip white lightnin'.

I'm going to skip the rest of your post because of the above statement, because here I thought I was talking to someone who was merely willfully ignorant, but as it turns out, you're just uninformed.

Dog whistle politics is where a position is argued in such a way as to be appealing to a certain segment of the population without being explicit about this, preserving a certain degree of plausible deniability. It can be applied to any number of issues, but when it is designed to appeal to racists, it can be refered to as dog whistle racism. It is a form of coded language that appears benign on the surface, but which resonates with certain people.

Constantly emphasising Barack Obama's foreign sounding name is a comparatively blatant form of this. It reminds the racist segment of the population that the President is an "other", someone who doesn't belong.

I couldn't care less about Obama and his policies. What I care more about is combating racism and bullshit arguments that really shouldn't have any place in politics. There are many reasons to disapprove of the President, but the right wing loonies do it for all the wrong reasons.

Well, YOU haven't leveled any real criticism against Obama in this thread, which is why I'm surprised you'd think that I was talking about YOU personally. Awfully defensive aren't we?

You came into this topic and targeted ME, remember? This whole exchange was because you took issue with one line of a video I linked to. You didn't say a thing about the rest of the video or how stupid our president can make himself look, you took issue with a perceived racist motivation behind using his middle name in the video's opening sequence. You all but called me racist for linking to it, you've called me stupid and ignorant for calling your argument ludicrous, and you've gone out of your way to defend somebody you claim to dislike anyway.

And you have the brass balls to play coy say I'm being defensive?

You either need to take your medication, or see a doctor and get on something, because you have lost your fucking mind.

I'd hate to make you feel less important than you undoubtedly think you are, but no, I wasn't targeting you. Like you say, I took issue with the use of the President's middle name for the reasons I have already laid out in my responses. If I gave you the impression that I was accusing you of being racist, then I apologize, because that was not my intention. Since the thread was about the risk of being called racist for making fun of or criticising the President, I chose to address the part of the video you posted that I thought was most relevant to that discussion.

I will NOT apologize for calling you ignorant and stupid however, because I am unable to explain how you cannot see how overemphasising the name "Hussein" is an attempt by some to imply that the President is an outsider to be distrusted and feared without using those terms.

I gave you the chance to explain it to me, but you seem to have chosen to avoid the subject. I'll give you another chance to explain to me why I'm the dummy, and not you: Why is the President's middle name referenced so frequently by some of his critics, while practically no one references the middle names of other public figures in their criticism?

and you've gone out of your way to defend somebody you claim to dislike anyway.

Yes. This is why I hate the right wing losers who can't think of anything of substance to criticise the President for. I will not sit idly by and let bullshit arguments slide, no matter who it's directed towards. I'll defend anyone who I think is being unfairly targeted, no matter what their political stripes may be.

And you have the brass balls to play coy say I'm being defensive?

You either need to take your medication, or see a doctor and get on something, because you have lost your fucking mind.

Well, you did infer an awful lot of meaning into what I've been saying here, so either you genuinely believe that I meant to say all of those things about you, or you're being facetious, and again, I don't want to believe that you're being a drama queen on purpose. Stick to what I'm actually saying and not what you think I'm saying. It's making you look insecure.

I understand the concept of dogwhistle racism as you present it, I just don't agree with it. There is a difference. I think it's another way for people to play the race card as a way to demean their opponents ad-hominem (because we all know how easy it is to disrupt a political discussion or silence an opponent by accusing them of being racist) without actually having to address the arguments they're putting forth, which itself is childish and takes away from real discussions that could be taking place.

This topic went from a casual observation about how you can't really make a joke about the president in this country without being perceived as racist, which I perceived to be an issue of free speech and could have even been parlayed into a discussion of the cult of personality surrounding the president, to you preaching a conspiracy theory that's somehow supposed to remind people who were already racist and unsupportive of Obama... to continue being racist and unsupportive of Obama.

There will always be people in this country who don't like Obama for one reason or another, for any number of legitimate or illegitimate reasons that you can come up with. The only thing running around proclaiming "dogwhistle racism" does is seek to further drive a wedge between those of us who do like him, and those of us who don't. At the end of the day, the only thing you've accomplished by bringing up this "issue" is to make both of us think the other is a blooming idiot, and I suspect a few others reading this probably think the same thing of us.

But what's there not to agree with? I want you to answer me honestly; why IS his middle name referenced so frequently? Do you sincerely believe that it's completely innocent, and that people who do it are only doing it to, what, make sure you know which Barack Obama theyr'e talking about?

They do it because they believe that having an arabic name is something negative, especially since he shares his name with Saddam Hussain.

It's not a conspiracy, it's obvious. If you don't agree with that, then explain it to me. Why do they do it?

I know you're sitting back right now typing up your next message trying to drive your stupid little point home and convince me that the guy was racist in doing what he did. So I'm going to cut you off at the pass, and make a suggestion; click on the video, and leave a comment ASKING THE GUY WHO MADE IT why he opened it the way he did. Don't sit there and bitch and complain and harass me over it, because I (like most reasonable people) don't give a shit about the first 5 seconds of a 6 minute long video of documented flubs and screwups our president has made during speeches.

So I see that even in the face of overwhelming evidence that you were wrong, you still refuse to admit it. Oh, well. I see no point in prolonging this discussion, especially not after you so thoroughly owned yourself.

Until next time, Pro.

I was not wrong in what I said; I still stand by my point that "dogwhistle racism" is just another excuse for people to play the race card and disrupt political discussion, two things YOU DID in this topic. You're only right in this instance because of (1) dumb luck and (2) because I don't vet my sources like the CIA. You could have just as easily been wrong, but go ahead, enjoy your little ego trip. You deserve it.

The Republicans feel obligated to fight tooth and nails at everything and anything President Barak Obama supports. For what? I really couldn't say for some odd reason they oppose everything and anything Obama is for except in every single case it's exactly what the Republicans have been screaming for since the dawn of time. Obama could legalize fishing with dynamite nationwide and The Republicans will vote it down because Obama supports it. (Not that he would/should) Obama could legalize any and all assault weapons to any and all civilian personnel nationwide and The Republicans will vote it down because Obama supports it. (Not that he would/should) Obama could approve Oil Drilling in Alaska and The Republicans will vote it down because Obama supports it. (Not that he would/should) Trouble with that is The Republicans have been pitching those same exact stances from the start. Bunch of hypocrites! I'll tell ya why The Republicans feel obligated to fight Obama tooth and nails on everything and I know all of you have been thinking the exact same thing but you've just been too afraid to say it but I'm not: It's because President Barak Obama is BLACK! It's because he's BLACK and THEY DON'T LIKE BLACK PEOPLE!!! Vicariously, they are racist! They're all a bunch of Crackers, Rednecks and Peckerwoods, QED! FUCK 'EM ALL!!!
