I hope I'm posting in the right thread for this, if not I apologise :S
I've only just very recently had an interest in making animations, I've started making simple black and white audio-less .gif files, and i think they are turning out okay... here' s a half finished one! give me some feedback :)

I was also wondering if there are more free and versatile softwares I could use. Possibly ones with colour and the ability to add sounds?

you can use
Flash - $699, Free 30 Day Trial
Flash has long been the standard application for creating web-based animation, along with games and other applications. The animation tools are easy to learn and are extremely powerful.

hmm then use synfig
Hey guys, I've been wondering which software is better. Currently, I have Adobe Flash CS5. Some of my friends suggest that I use Toon Boom if I'm going to create my own animation. I'm confused here.
Would you care to give me their differences?
There are things I do and there are things I want to do. Overall, I just want to live my life and end it the way I want.

Nope. Pencil is still going. I use Pencil all the time. Not perfect, but a good animation program.

I'd say save up for flash, it's worth it. Maybe in between get the flash trial for practice
...and of course you could always pirate it...but...that's illegal and stuff
