I believe a more accurate title for the thread should be something like "Why Is the Sonic Franchise Hated?"
Mega64, a video-gaming-meets-Jackass group, has vented their frustration (seriously or not) about why the "new Sonic" sucks.
1. After the Sonic Adventure series ended, the ideas afterwards didn't really fly with them. It felt like there was something missing (it's their opinion, as there are others that are perhaps more open minded to the direction SEGA went, with games like Sonic Heroes and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).)
More likely the older sonic (perhaps like myself, though I never had a Genesis, let alone a Master System, which was before my time, but also perhaps the "un-official" first time Sonic had his own game [in the Master System's latest years]), want to hold onto how great Sonic was before the Dreamcast sank, and we were all introduced to Sonic Heroes (referred to some as "Sonic Adventure 3") on all the other systems at the time.
Heroes was perhaps the only Post-dreamcast Sonic [platformer] game that I played outside of Sonic Riders. It was different, it felt fresh, but I think the main reason it felt "away from home" for me, was because it wasn't playable on a SEGA system (the Dreamcast!).
I don't know what people who loved Atari's works when they were a hardware & software company think of their franchises now, but as someone who got to personally enjoy Sonic in its entirety one time (my previous consoles were mainly Nintendo systems) on Dreamcast, I think I feel a loss of SEGA's magic after Heroes was the first to make a dive into absolute "foreign" territory, with no connection to the Dreamcast at all.
On a side note: there were some sources that have claimed that even Sonic Adventure was originally going to be an RPG (perhaps the answer to Nintendo's Super Mario RPG series), which then explains the existence of RPG elements in the series like an in-depth story of all the characters, puzzle-solving, and the "Adventure Field" zone of the game(s). I can't imagine how excited (or ticked-off) fans of the Sonic franchise would be if Sonic Adventure did stay a full-fledged RPG. I don't know what I'd think, but I think I might've enjoyed it; chances are it may have shared the real-time elements we've seen in the Phantasy Star Online series (what's funny to me, is that for some reason I feel like PSO is Sonic Adventure in disguise, seeing Pioneer 2 as "Station Square" and Ragol as the "Action Stage".),
Heck even in Skies of Arcadia, there's perhaps a moment or two, you may ask yourself "haven't I seen this place somewhere before"?
I think the PSO development staff (who was Sonic Team, no surprise there!) made a big reference to Sonic Adventure, with the last part of the game, as it seemed reminiscent of a time and place in SA.
Franchises will change in time, but I really think that the most important things that made Sonic who he is should be focused on (if we're just talking about Sonic and not the franchise), such as the ability to jump and run really really fast. It'd just help to be at the dev's office to better understand the direction(s) they decided to go. "Will this attract new people to the franchise? Will older fans still cling to Sonic if we do this? How will this promote our image?" It's questions like these that are most likely, or at least should be, the ones that'll be asked behind corporate doors...
----------------------------------------
-------------------
All in all (TL,DR?): [The] Sonic [franchise] can't please everyone! We've all seen examples of this with pop stars and whatnot (Bieber Fever anyone?). Something's gotta sell, someway, and sometimes those will or will not depend on what we value most about someone or something.
Btw, Travis, your link is broken.

That's exactly what you just did. Except you were harsher than he was.
You look nice today.

Your argument is invalid.

This. But if you get past the plot being terrible, but - at least as far as I got - the level design was nice, the music was catchy, and the controls were functional. It had the potential to be good if Sega just remade the game and purged it of the bad glitches, it would surely get high ratings (Or get low ratings from a bunch of people who didn't even bother playing it).
Because people can't stop talking about him, and over the past 20 years or so, he hasn't really developed as a character. The cast of friends are at best times toleratable, and Sega usually puts out a game of him every year. And besides, he doesn't offer to much as a playable character; what are you suppose to do with a guy who can only run fast?
That said, I actually like the guy.
He has a much better backstory than Mario, always seems to live his life on edge; puts them Nikes on and just do it! His universe just seems endless, anyone could make up anything about him, and most would see it being thesable. Besides, not many people can pull off a universal principle of space-time (speed for the lamon) as well as he can.
Sonic died after he went from 2d to 3d he had terrible game after terrible game sonic just didn't adapt to next gen like mario.

Really? Most Sonic fans say that Sonic Adventure was quite possibly the best Sonic 3D game.

I still like Sonic. The games are still cool. The new Sonig Generations is awesome! I have tried 2-4 levels of the game myself and it is like a good mix between Sonic Colors and Sonic on the Genesis.
My favorite Sonic Games would be the Adventure games. The only games I really didn't enjoy at all was Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic and the Black Knight or something...
But the "hardcore fanbase" is just stupid... fags who roleplay different Sonic-characters or custom made characters who fucks each other and have childrens together...
also rule 34...
Lets just start with the fact that... Sonic games have always ranged from either completely sucking, or being actually great games (not outstanding, but good enough to keep you entertained)
Sonic Adventure series were pretty much the only thing that kept Sonic alive in the 2000s, because lets be honest, before that, Sonic R sucked.... I mean... it REALLY sucked... and then there was Sonic Advance games, which were pretty good too, but not as fun as I recall the Adventure games were.
Later, came Sonic 2006, and everyone knows that story... and then came the average sonic games: Secret Rings, Unleashed ( haven't played Black Knight, so I can't really judge that one)
Sonic Colors is a decent game for me, however I just never got motivated to play it longer than 4-5 missions.
Another thing that annoys me is the fact that Sega keeps releasing re-makes, NO ports to every single system possible of the first Sonic the Hedgehog. Its the same BS with Capcom and Resident Evil games. Instead of wasting their time porting the same game to every console possible, just make a better game!
Resident Evil 2 came out for: PS1, PS1 Dual Shock edition, N64, Dreamcast, Gamecube and Game.com. I swear if PS2 wouldn't have backwards compatibility, they would have released it for PS2 as well.
Anyways, that's just something that bothers me personally, I know some of you don't mind that, but the time Videogame companies spend porting or remaking games could be better used. Sometimes the remakes and ports turn out like crap most of the time..
Bottom line, the Sonic franchise is dying, and although Sonic had it's good games in the past, its just not living up to today's standards anymore, because there are much better platformers

aww man, that was one of the only RPG games i liked, better than the new Mario DS RPG's, and it was not corny at all unlike the new sonic game franchise.
I fucking love sonic, just not the games he's in.
It's about time for him to go.
All the games are shit, except for the old ones, and the new ones are made for the 11 year olds that occupies the user base.

The old ones are really good but noone even gives a reason why and I think the new games are actually fun so anyone who doesn't like classic and modern isn't a true sonic fan so anyone reading this who thinks they are a sonic fan you are not unless you like old AND new.
Sonic is a really polarizing franchise. You either love it or hate it. I think a lot of the hate comes from how immature and obnoxious its fanbase is. They seem to praise every crappy idea that Sonic Team decides to squeeze in.

The reason why people hate Sonic so much is because they have an obsessive fanbase, most notably when you have fangirls creating unholy amounts of DeivantArt that is slash pairings, {I would rather not discuss about that further.} and the fanboys are pissing and moaning about how Jason Griffith sucks ass compared to the previous VAs, and so on. Of course, Spax3 is the best example that I could think of that spearheaded all of the Jason Griffith hate.
As for the games, all I can really tell you is that after Sonic Adventure 2, the franchise really when down the tubes, and it didn't help that Sega kept milking the hell out of it time and time again. To be fair, the games are now getting somewhat better overall, but they're not going to be replacing the classics anytime soon, that's for sure.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.
Partially because of the fans, and partially because the games were never that good, especially compared to his supposed rival Mario. Many fans will insist that Sonic only produced great games for about four years. Mario has been pumping out top tier titles since the Atari era.
BECAUSE THE GAMES FUCKING SUCK
JESUS FUCK
hey
The games range from nostalgic (all the Genesis games) to mediocre (Adventure) to bad (Heroes) to an insult to video games as a whole ('06).
But the main reason I don't like sonic is because of the absolutely horrendous fanbase. Not even Call of Duty has a worse fanbase than Sonic does. First you have little kids who are huge fans of completely unlikeable characters, then you have little kids who create their own stupid unlikeable fan characters, then you have little kids who "create" (recolor) their own fancharacters, and then... Well, then you have CWC.
On a related note, a friend of mine had a demotivational that showed a screenshot of a Silver fangirl giving someone who pretended to be Silver on Deviantart her address.
There are a LOT of other reasons why I hate Sonic, and you'll find a lot of them by going to DeviantArt, typing in the name of your favorite video game series, then typing "Sonic" in after it.
I don't do recolors and I don't know what the hell the sonic fan base is.
At 9/16/11 11:04 PM, Travis wrote: People like you in the fanbase.
I'm being completely serious.
You are a 14 year old sonic fan and people can't stand that.
Honestly, this. I could go into further depth as to why Sonic fans are typically more annoying, but I don't really think that's necessary.

I actually have to disagree with you somewhat here. Adventure was, in my opinion, Awesome. Heroes wasn't bad, I completed it and somewhat enjoyed it. Sonic 06 was an insult like you said, and every game between then and Sonic 4 episode 1 failed epically.
of completely unlikeable characters
Ok, Big the cat is the shittiest character who has ever been made. However, some (few) characters such as Knuckles and Shadow do have personalities and character development.
But the main reason I don't like sonic is because of the absolutely horrendous fanbase.
I hate it when a fanbase determines whether or not people like a game. Sonic is geared for kids and young teens, so that'll end up being your fanbase. What do you expect out of kids like that, a fanbase rivaling FPSRussia?
People should like video games for the actual "game" rather than the fans behind it.
I'm loving and tolerating the shit outta you
I don't hate the character. For some reason, a furry/drawing fan base emerged a while ago, which are usually very poor artists. I find that part funny. The Sonic franchise has been over used and most of Sonic's games are mediocre, which is why I dislike a lot of Sonic things.
Well.
I'm not sure if I regret making that post I made here. On one hand, I now have even worse reputation here than I did before. On the other hand, it caused me to receive THIS message.
lololol
