They're a trilogy for the Gameboy, the first one was quite mediocre although it had some interesting ideas, and the other two improved the formula and were pretty good. I never hear anyone talking about them though, in fact I'm a pretty big FF fan and I had never even heard of these until a few months ago (never being released in europe probably had something to do with that). They're sort of like Mystic Quest though, in that they don't really have anything to do with Final Fantasy and the name was just shamelessly slapped on to boost sales (which is pretty daft considering FF wasn't even that popular at the time). They later became the SaGa series.
Like the original FF you choose your characters at the beginning but instead of black mage, white mage, fighter etc. you choose between a human, mutant or monster and can choose male or female for each. The leader character you choose also impacts the amount of items you can carry.
Humans can't level up or become stronger from fighting, their stats can only be increased with potions which is more than a little ballsy, especially since the potion system is so damn weird. You would assume a ''HP600'' potion would increase your HP by 600, right? Wrong, it increases your maximum HP by a random amount from 1-20 and once you surpass a total of 600HP each potion from there on will only add a maximum of 1 HP. Also HP800 are the largest potions in the game. So that kind of sucks.
Mutants are weaker than humans but become stronger from fighting and depending on what kind of weapons they use. They can only carry 4 items though, as opposed to a human's 8.
Monsters are the weakest and can't carry any items at all, but they're most fun to use, you get meat from some enemies and monsters can transform into different creatures by eating different combinations of meat. Sometimes it can be hard to tell whether a certain meat will weaken you or make you stronger though.
So did anyone else here play these games? They're definitely worth checking out if you're into JRPGs.
