Wait, what? That's odd, i've always thought that in any legal document where it says "nationality" you put in the country you're a legal citizen of, not heritage or ethnicity. How would you ask the question "what nation are you a legal citizen of?" in shorter form?
Also, i've always found it funny how Americans whose families have been in the US for generations still say stuff like "i'm German". No, you're not, you're American. Speak German to me. Name 5 German cities. Spell the Chancellor's name properly. But the one that really cracks me up is when a blond blue-eyed girl calls herself a Cherokee princess.

This isn't a legal document though. I would assume that's what OP meant, otherwise he probably just would have said "What country do you live in?" instead.
