The hurricane can spawn tornadoes, it actually already has in Virginia.

Indeed, still doesn't change the fact that the whole situation is over hyped. In the end the worse that can happen is inches of flood and broken trees causing some property damage.

Aren't all hurricanes overhyped though?

It really depends on the damage it caused.
Hurricane Andrew actually did cause damage to Florida, but to be fair it is Florida. In the end, there are good number that turns out to be fairly harmless to others.
Katrina was able to devastated New Orleans due to the problem with the levee and the fact that hte city is below sea level, making it easier to flood.
When it comes to most cases, it's all gas.

Look, people: for those of us who are unaccustomed to tropical weather, this IS a huge fucking deal. I just got done yelling at someone I know from New Orleans. Look at it this way: would you expect a Texan to know what to do in a blizzard? No. Then why should you expect Long Islanders, who haven't seen a hurricane since 1938, to know what to do?
For Mayor Bloomberg, it's a no-win situation. Nobody has cars...so he shuts down the subway system. But if it floods, people die if it's not closed, and they'd be all "HURR WHY DIDN'T YOU SHUT DOWN THE SUBWAY?!!"
My trip to Fairfax is still on. Hopefully I can find a hotel Monday night.

Yeah seriously!I mean here on the east coast we don't get weather like this very often and when its barreling on top of us we better have had taken precautions.I live near this town its like kind of old and it got flooded in the 70s from a hurricane.Im not sure what the extenuating circumstances will be for Northern Virginia but probably heaps of rain and lots of wind. It ll be dangerous that what I know.I know people who are acting like its not a big deal which is kind of annoying because they might not make the right precautions. But its like I know they will stay inside just to save face.

The hurricane isn't here in Virginia yet, but the wind and rain are getting ugly and a section of my fence is gone. Expecting to lose power soon.

So far everything is just a simple rainstorm, no telling how bad it might be tonight and tomorrow morning though. We had to tie down all of our outdoor stuff.

My local news channel, Channel 8 (that has won a few awards for best news cast and shit) said that there have been several (I believe 5) confirmed cases where people have been, "killed by Irene."

This just happened 20 minutes ago... right outside my grandfather's. I could feel the shake from my house.
The thing is... I live in north-eastern Massachusetts. This was purely rain that rotted it and finally downed it. The other half is cracked and will surely come down tomorrow.
Sucks... this was my favorite tree to read under

So apparently the hurricane hasn't even reached Northern Virginia/DC area and is still near Norfolk which is in south Virginia. Its moving very slow which is bad because its able to dump large amounts of water before moving. The worst is yet to come I imagine.

Going to do my laundry to night to have clothes when we don't have power. So far in NJ, there have only been rainstorms. Once Irene hits, it'll be twice as much rain and long periods of 60-80 mph winds... I'll get my camera out when it happens.

Well with the chances of tornadoes being spawned, that alone could cause plenty of damage to whatever it comes into contact with. Plus, the winds from the hurricane have already tore the roofs off a few houses. Most people are going to be fine, but there already have been a few deaths and seriously damaged homes.
I think most of the hype is coming from people in the storms path rather than the news. So far, from what I've seen, the news has mainly just been informing us about the conditions of the storm, reporting on the damage caused so far, and telling people living in the hurricanes path to take proper precautions. They may say things like, "this storm is very dangerous", but I think that's more directed at the people living right on the coast, not to say there is no danger involved for others in the hurricanes path though.
I'm going to wait until later tonight to check out the news on the local weather, find out if there has been any tornadoes sighted or what kind of damage the storm is causing. So far, it's just been raining all day and a little windy. I'm mostly just worried about losing power, I don't feel like sitting around in my house with nothing to do.

The people in the East part of it are apparantly going to get more winds, while people like me in the west part of the hurricane will get more rain.

I just returned from a bar. I was there and Governor Corbett came on TV talking about the hurricane warnings in Delaware and Philadelphia counties. Hurricane warnings?! Here?! Makes me wonder if Wade and the NG crew are gonna be OK, especially given how slowly Irene is moving now.
Now I'm REALLY worried about my trip...

It's times like this that I thank my lucky stars that I live in the Midwest, where nothing seems to happen, both good AND BAD.

You have to wait until late tonight-tomorrow morning. This is a slow moving storm, it's going to take a while to reach you, but when it does, it's going to take a while for it to pass by as well.
