Laptops for kids in Africa? Are you kidding me?
One of three things is going to happen to these...
1. They will be stolen and used for more 419 scams in Nigeria
2. Sold for drug money

What they need is education. If only there were a device that could act as a portal to the greatest pool of information that mankind has created. Something that you could put on top of your lap and allow access to a vast network of computers, a "web" if you will that is as wide as the world.

Good website. I remember in high school for freshmen and sophmore year they only wanted us playing on that site. As for the laptops I remember Tom making a front page post on it a couple of years back stating those laptops were not too awful bad.

I didn't know that laptops were the only way to access great amounts of information and as such are absolutely necessary to the learning experience of the average African child.
Seriously, what these kids need is a stable and affordable education system(Again, laptops aren't necessary.) and a good amount of healthy food and clean water.

Here in Finland we actually had a nation-competition between different classes, where the class with the most rice collected would win. Surprisingly, our class won! lol. Suppose it didn't have a lot of competitors, as Finland is a small country anyways. Well. The sponsors of course decided the bought our class a prize: three health-drinks per person. Well one bottle of those probably costs around 4 dollars. There were 28 students in my class, so that equals health-drinks worth about 340 dollars! My rough estimations say that hundreds of African children could be given food with that money, but no. We had to get health-drinks (which nobody even liked anyway).
Conclusion: charities don't work. Period.

Laptops are a great way to get education you know. In fact, I remember this one person who was writing in a newspaper asking why we even needed education anymore given the fact that you could find whatever you wanted on the Internet. Seriously, I've read books written by college professors and they are not able to answer a question but you can find a better answer just by Googling it. I believe this can still be beneficial.

I think a charity that's even more topsy-turvey is Child's Play. Instead of giving starving Ethiopian's food or money for medical care, let's give children who have plenty of food and health care video games! Obviously sick Little Timmy needs money for his amusement much more than Starving Tyrone needs it to not die.

1) Most of Africa has severe issues with getting any kind of electricity, making the laptops extremely situtational and limited tools of learning.
2) Without infastructure in a country to support educated individuals with jobs that make use of their skills, all that will happen is that the children will grow up with their education and migrate. The problem will still exist until you can give the kids of the next generation a reason to stay in their country and put their education to good use.

Yeah, nothing says topsy-turvey like giving kids in hospitals something to do instead of just sitting there, going through therapy, and possibly dying from something. Nice to see that you have your priorities in order.
Besides, I'm sure the starving Ethiopians would rather have food than the Internet, so sending perfectly good laptops out there is a bad idea, compared to clean water and food.
