OK crew, i need some games. I've been looking over my collection (a small one) and have decided that the survival horror genre is the one I need to start working on.

I need suggestions as to what survival horror games i should play. Ranging from NES games to todays new games.

None of the horror I've came in encounter were ever that scary to be honest, They only made me fraustrated as I found out that I'm running out of bullets and medical supplies.

I believe the best series to go for is the main entries for silent Hill, as it has a large feeling of suspense

Silent Hill series. The whole series is great and despite what you might hear from other fans, Silent Hill 4 is really god damned good (my favorite in the series). I own every SH game that game out on consoles and each one is scary, suspenseful, intelligent and amazing. Be sure to keep watch for Silent Hill: Rebirth, a SH fan game in the works that I'm helping with on music.

Fatal Frame 2 Directors Cut scared the pants off of me with it's first person view and quiet atmosphere. I've played the first Fatal Frame but the second game's directors cut version beats it by many kilometers. Great game, a recommended buy for any horror fan.

Penumbra series... 'Nuff said, haha, plan on getting these my self. Look great and I hear they won't disappoint.

Doom 3 was good on the Xbox but I know they cut shit out from the PC version. It's an FPS that we all know and love but regard with differing opinions. This game is filled with, what some would call, unnecessary, unrealistic amounts of pitch black darkness. The afore mentioned darkness is akin to The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, which isn't a horror game but an extremely good game none the less.

I can't think of any more right now but I'll be back with more.

Amnesia: Dark Descent

It's on steam for $20 right now i think.

You depend on light, if you're in the dark for too long insanity kicks in and you may die. You're being followed by what's only referred to as "a shadow" and there's a beast stalking the dark, narrow halls of the mansion you're in, looking for you.

It has a great sense of horror and impending danger, seeing as you can't attack. When you see the beast or something bad happens your only options are to run and/or hide.

Go check out some gameplay or reviews on it. I'm only about a quarter way done and i'm already loving it, i especially love the water part near the beginning. If you buy the game, you'll see why

Clock Tower for the SNES. It's a classic of the genre and creepy for a SNES game, the only problem is that fighting the enemy that keeps chasing you is a bit too easy, and some of the puzzles are very cryptic.

Galerians on the Psone. In this game you play as a 14 year old boy in a futuristic, dystopic world, and you have psychic powers. You have to shoot drugs into your neck to activate the powers. It's a pretty cool and overlooked game in the genre, though not a typical survival horror game. The atmosphere and story are very dark, though the English voice-over is poorly done.

Manhunt.. I'm not sure if I'd call this survival horror, but it's horror, and it's all about survival, so I guess it counts. It's a stealth based game with an excellent enemy and sound design.

Condemned - Criminal origins. Another one that I'm not sure is strictly survival horror, but I think it fits. It has a very realistic feeling to it, you mostly go around in dilapidated buildings and streets and fight against demented homeless people and other lunatics. The story is also interesting.

I know this may sound very contradictory but, that game is really good, but not worth the money. Its 20 dollars for a 4 hour game. People make their own mods but none of them are notable or very long for that matter and none really get finished.

Good game, but really worth like 5$

Thanks guys, loving the responses. This is all going towards a good list of Survival Horror games, even though the genre is a bit diluted now, there are some good classics here I never thought of playing.

This is the list so far:
Silent hill series
Sweet Home
Clock Tower series
Resident Evil series
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Fatal Frame (or known as Project Zero) series

The others mentioned in this thread will be researched. I've also been told to play these games too:

Left 4 Dead
Dead Rising
Dead Space
Haunted house (Xbox live)
Dino Crisis
F.E.A.R

However, do you think these ones fit into the genre? I will be playing these anyway but I would like your opinion on these. ALSO please keep posting more Survival Horror games, the list only gets better from your choice.

Those games are all well worth checking out (with the possible exception of Haunted House which I know nothing about) but they're not survival horror games. Dead Space is questionable but for my money it's a bit too action based to be a proper survival horror.

And for the record Dead Space 2 is even less of a survival horror than the first one.
