Feel the need to go about disproving religion? I mean, we always see threads that turn into flame wars about creationism. Usually Atheists try to find loop holes in religion and such, or they insult the other side calling them "fairy tales" or illogical or something another.

Of course, we have Mormons and Jehovah witnesses going to people's door, but you can just say "no thank you" and close the door. I suppose I wouldn't mind it so much If I didn't see it ALL the time. Religions admittedly are justified in it, considering it relies on what is their eternal salvation in their belief. However, I am wondering why others feel obligated to convey their beliefs in a hostile way? Either side being hostile is wrong, but I almost always find its Atheists who feel the need to express their beliefs.

Why do you think Atheists feel the need to disprove religion, even when it may diminish somebody's happiness?

People like to get technical when you just say "Agnostic" Such as "You can't be in the middle, you have to be a theist or an atheist" So I decided I would be technical.

I don't. I think faith is very important to people and while I have none myself I fully support people who do have faith in any kind of religion. It keeps them going and I am somewhat jealous that I cannot believe in a faith myself.

Same here. I find the stuff hard to actually believe in but I realize that if you commit yourself to believing in that stuff and acquiring a faith, you'll be a much happier person. I guess maybe you could always pretend like you believe in the stuff.

Because it's a tool for the weak to control the strong, a list of things you must or can't do, a word telling people to spread it, even tho it's not true, and because religion has done more evil than good in history IF it has done any good at all.

You can't force faith. It might sound silly but I know that. I would love to believe in a God and take faith from that but I just cannot. I find the idea of a God to be absurd almost. I'm just holding out that I can have some kind of spiritual revelation.

When a person discovers the truth about life and faith they can finally free themselves from that tyranny, that tortuous mental prison.

There is a war on empirical thought in the name of religion and many theists make it a point to try to spread their cancerous faith onto others, through coercion, intimidation and sometimes even force, they feel that their mythology gives them this right.

Atheists are under siege every day, we just want the world to wake up.

Most Atheists don't go around trying to make people give up their beliefs just like most Christians don't go around bombing abortion clinics. Most just go through their lives tolerating the right of others to believe whatever the fuck they want. Every group has its share of douche bags, it's not really fair to make a generalization based on the worst minority.

Religions are a nice guideline and basis for morals to follow and values to have in life. Unfortunately some of the messages promote Capitalist ideals. Sex is taboo so I figure people get laid less, get more stress, and eventually get depressed and buy more stuff. At the end of the day doing something just because the group, or the book says, seems foolish unless you have faith in yourself and the decisions you've made up to that point.

I stopped reading here. Every belief system has it's fanatics, not just religion. Atheists, monotheists, optimistics, pessimistics, fatalists and those who believe in absolute free-will.

Stop stereotyping! Haven't there been enough threads that both says that atheism and Christianity is stupid. Look both sides have douchebags on their side that have to ever mean prove that they're right. The rest and most of them (both Christians and atheists) live in co-existence and respect that some believe that, some believe in something else, and some believe in nothing religious at all.

Point, religion threads on this site is nothing new, they should not be posted anymore we won't come to a conclusion whatever God exist or not. Why won't we come to a conclusion? Because site is mostly inhabited 13 old brats (I know it's a stereotype) that have no extensive knowledge of religious beliefs and its history.

I believe something that can't be proven either way; therefore the people who don't agree with my belief must be wrong since they can't prove their belief. Consequently, I will go around telling them how their belief is wrong and my belief is correct. If they don't agree with me they must be ignorant fundamentalists who can't see the truth when it's standing right in front of them

There is more than one connotation. Much as people believe "ironic" to mean something that is funny and coincidental because it bears those modern connotations, so has the word "atheism" come to be understood to mean things other than its linguistic meaning.

If you look at the etymology of the word it is clear: a-theism. Much like asexual, asymmetrical, apolitical, etc. the "a" signifies the preclusion thereof, so "atheist" means "not theist", it is literally it's only distinction is that theism is wrong.

Agnostic (a-gnostic, gnosis being "knowledge" in greek) means essentially that one who is agnostic "doesn't know". They have not reached a conclusion in the matter.

The "broad definition" you refer to is more accurately an incorrect definition. If a person is agnostic, they do not know one way or the other, so therefore having reached a conclusion in the matter is contradictory. If they are atheist, meaning that they have ruled out theism, then they are not agnostic because they have reached a conclusion.

It's like people who claim they are vegetarian but eat meat and call themselves "omnivorous vegetarians". It's stupid, it's contradictory, it doesn't make sense, and they should stop saying it.
