The Star Syndicate got old and stopped caring, as did most of the Kitty Krew. The rest are unfunny, lazy no-talent shitheads who never get anything done.

The last spam group to be active was the Duck Division, and I think they died out over a year ago. It got a lot harder to get things to pass, so most of them got bored and wandered off to TF2 or SA or whatever. I stuck around for a while, then got too old to give a damn anymore, and even if I wanted to do anything, I'm on Linux these days so I can't.

Another major factor was forum drama. The KK couldn't keep their forum up, since the admins are utterly incompetent, kept breaking shit, and occasionally got into bitchfights and assed the whole thing, and the DD had absurd amounts of infighting and basically imploded.

Those groups were all boring one-note imitations of stuff the clock crew did.

They're groups that missed the whole point, and then beat whatever residual imitated humor value there was out of it by using the same shlock over and over again.

Game's changed anyway, when one guy with a couple dozen proxies and nothing else to do is rigging awards what's the point in getting a whole group of people to go bopping for horse apples on that nonsense?

Mark my words, these shabby imitation groups are never going to shine or take off in the same way. Best find an original idea to run with.

They deserve it, don't you think? They're part of NG history.

So you're trying to say that just because they do something you like, you should vote 5 regardless of quality? I'M ASHAMED1!1!!1

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, Yeek yeek whoop whoop; and there was fucccccccccccc

This.

The difference between the Clocks and most of the other groups is that the clocks had a different motive. They never wanted to hurt newgrounds, steal awards, or break things. They wanted to mess with the portals judgement system. See how much spam they could get through legitimately. By working as a team they passed flash that otherwise never would have. But their flash had rules, it had minor amounts of effort (rarely resorting to cheap tricks, reused intros, or single frame pictures with ear rape). Later they cleaned up (and grew up) for the most part and realised that they could begin making quality flash.
If anything the clocks were a anaimator and artist group who started with spam as they learned the ropes, and then grew into something more noble and skilled.

The locks and Star syndicate, while practically direct ripoffs (especially the Lock Legion) followed the similar path. the locks started with spam, then grew out of it and used their numbers and members to produce passable stuff. And star syndicate went from being a spam group to a showcase of unknown and unappreciated artists. They were unique in that almost anyone could join, or be showcased in their daily flash. They were an unjuried exhibition, a way for flash artists to get their stuff seen amongst better and worse artists depending on who else was part of the daily.

Id say the kitty krew was the last of the noble spam groups. while they never really evolved out of their spam, individual authors who were part of the group had major talent, and often would produce fantastic solo stuff. The KK only wanted spam and a few awards (the award stealing which they more or less grew out of), and because of that they were more of a nuisance than a blessing in disguise.

Then you had groups like the Barney Bunch, The Duck Division, etc. who completely missed the point. They were less organized and community based and more about using malicious methods to get their stuff passed, or snag awards, or attack other parts of the site.

The remaining knock off groups spawned more out of the bandwagon when a larger spam group seemed to be doing a lot. They were kids who felt left out of the cool spam group who was doing stuff right and thought it would be a good idea to make their own. Robot Rangers, socom squad, etc.

Ultimately though the groups die. Maturity of the users if a large factor, real life takes over for the ones who were maintaining the group, or submitting the most. They grow out of it, and the jokes grow old. The first few times people get pissed by a spam flash, later turns into annoyance, and then apathy. People who used to get mad at spam just get bored with it. And the same type of spam looses its power and appeal.

I think spam groups will always be around, but they will always be cheap knock offs of the original clock crew who cant do it quite the same.

Also proof that the old spam is dead. I havent seen a pube muppet flash in ages.

Pretty sure k3ltron and BFK have done a few good submissions in the latest years. So they are kind of around but disbanded for the most part.

I do miss the Kitty Krew and some of there flashes are so funny especially the fake hentai submissions. Don't miss the Duck Division horrible stuff ,they did hacking and such. Spam groups are rare these days however I did notice a group, called Soup Squad I think who stole the place of the top five.

The difference between the Clocks and most of the other groups is that the clocks had a different motive.

Contradiction much?

The locks and Star syndicate, while practically direct ripoffs (especially the Lock Legion) followed the similar path.

I'm really not sure where you got that idea, but it's not at all true; the Star Syndicate set the pattern that the Duck Division and Legion of Doom, as well as many spammers not affiliated with a significant group (usernamed, Orangebeef, Levon, Kavinel, Fleek, etc.), followed. Sevenstar got deleted for flooding the BBS with links to minigirls (a child porn site that was widely suspected of being an FBI honeypot), cr0m started the trend of mass account hacking (seriously, where do you think the term 'yeeked' came from?), Goldencat wrote and distributed the SS virus, and supposedly they were stealing dailies several years before I made that a trend.

They were also a showcase of underrated artists, of course, and a lot of prominent animators got their start there, but they definitely did not follow in the 'harmless fun' mold (although it wasn't seen as harmless in its time!) of the Clock Crew.

The original KK were fucking brilliant, but the only people they ever had with any amount of talent were Kottbullar and squeef. And I think they were only 'noble' here because they devoted most of their malicious energies toward the forum itself.

Then you had groups like the Barney Bunch, The Duck Division, etc. who completely missed the point. They were less organized and community based and more about using malicious methods to get their stuff passed, or snag awards, or attack other parts of the site.

The DD was community-based; we just weren't big enough to have a significant community, and a lot of the people in it kept their identities secret. Either that or they were new to the scene, which wouldn't be surprising since I know some of them (Hooker) were. I'm still not sure who half of the members were, and I didn't realize the admin was s0und until right before he left.

I guess the DD didn't look community-based because a lot of the spammers who didn't want to affiliate with any real group ended up as orbiters, and the DD became well-known right around the time forums started to be replaced by Skype.

Another thing that everyone here seems to be forgetting is that a lot of spammers weren't part of any group. The best spam in 2007-2009 was done by independent actors, some of whom (squeef, Usernamed, myself to a certain extent) were probably more influential than any group members at the time. That's probably a large part of why spam died out; a large part of effective trolling in this context is building a reputation, which is a lot easier to do in a group. Hell, I can't even think of any spammers who managed to build a reputation on their own, besides whoever was behind the Robot Rangers, and for obvious reasons, that doesn't count. Snaws or Fleek might have, although I can't remember, and it's possible that I did and I just never noticed. (Fuck knows most of this shit was my fault anyway; I was damn near the only active spammer for the first half of 2008, and I (re)popularized both mass yeeking (although I only learned that particular trick from Usernamed) and stealing dailies.)

God I feel old.

p much, also it became practically impossible to get anything to pass in... early 2009 I think? and a bunch of people got bored then and either developed a real life or wandered off to troll TF2 instead
