Painting a guitar for a friend. 2011-08-16 00:11:32 Reply

Hey all. I'm working a guitar for a friend of mine and thought I'd come here for some critique.

My friend requested a ton of little monsters all over the damn thing, so there's a ton. Unfortunately, making sure I'm keeping a good flow of colors is somewhat difficult considering how many there are. I'm mainly looking for help with color placement as I work on this. I want the whole thing to feel fresh and vibrant, without certain areas getting too bogged down with one particular hue.

Any and all observations are welcome.

The whole guitar needs to be painted, both front and back...as well as the neck.

well depends where in the world you are... they are all around about the same... its a large area so i would recommend using a spray gloss varnish to get a nice smooth even coat... most likely give it two coats just to be on the safe side... also this gives it a overall gloss finish so you wont have different reflective areas *normally paints are rather dull compared to the finish of the stuff your working on*

just make sure to read the instructions... make sure you give it a good shake for about 2 mins roughly, spray in short controlled bursts in the same direction in a well vented area. let it stand to dry for around about 30 mins after giving one side a light spray coat... don't think "oh it doesnt seem to be think enough"... its better to do many thin ones then one blobbly coat...

also heres an example of the first one i did around 4-5 years ago :P

when i saw the thread title i actually expected to see just a wip guitar on a canvas lmao

anyway this is very good but make sure to take plenty of good quality photos of the final piece and finish it up with some very good hard-wearing varnish because otherwise the only legacy of your art will be a big chipped flaky mess, good luck
