Are your parents incorrect? 2011-08-11 00:25:35 Reply

Obviously you would say "yes", but I mean that they are so wrong it isn't funny? If you do, care to share?

Often times I get into politics with my parents and it can often get into a mess. Mom is worse. Mom is next to being extremely right when it comes to the spectrum of politics that anytime I mention something like "drugs" or "the economy", she disagrees with me. I know for a fact that she never puts in the effort into researching these issues up unlike I have, and she believes whatever the hell Bush says is true (especially now since she is listening to Decision Points).

I have actually read Decision Points, and it's more of a biography of his life more than opinions.

So one time, we were watching the news, and there was a report saying that there has been in overcrowding of prisoners. Being a libertarian that I am, I just said out loud "Legalize Drugs!"

Before you say "You started the argument..." Mom does it often too, usually from different topics though.

Mom pretty much lectured me on how legalizing drugs is only going to make people take more drugs and they will go crazy. I tried to explain to her that with prior research that it isn't the case, and if they were legal, then kids will actually have a harder time containing the illegal substances. As of right now, a kid can get some marijuana much easier than getting beer or cigarettes (will provide link if asked). She of course doesn't agree with me.

Well that is one of them anyways, I'll try to think of something else a little later.

So, basically, someone disagrees with you on a matter, and for that reason, they're wrong? Gotcha.

Looking at it now, I was not clear at all, and the example I gave was not very good.

Well once, she and I argued about when Pink Floyd: The Wall movie came out. I kept saying 1982, but she insisted that it was like 1978.

She was really convinced that it was 1978 when it came out.

My parents are complete dumb asses. I'm not even exaggerating how utterly moronic they truly are. They are frequently wrong and they have attained little wisdom in their lifetimes. It's safe to say that they are unintelligent and uninformed.

In political views there really is no correct/incorrect about it - some issues are so debatable that there are "studies" and "polls" to back up things in either direction. I mean, if my dad says to me that it has been medically proven that cocaine has no long term health risks he is probably "incorrect" but just because we differ on our opinions of drug policy doesn't mean he is necessarily incorrect.

Personally I think that everyone should try to differentiate between having an opposing opinion and being incorrect. You obviously keep an eye out for studies which may prove drugs should be legalized while your mom might be more perceptive of studies saying drugs shouldn't be legalized. You two could probably fill a room each with studies proving your side given enough time and resources. Doesn't mean one of you is right and one of you is wrong and you really shouldn't think that about somebody just because they have an opposing opinion as you. Debate is healthy as long as you don't cross that line - where you're degrading a person in your mind because of their opinion.

You were probably being a vague twat, and your parents thought you were talking about The Wall album, not the movie.

Oh no, we were indeed talking about the movie. To go even further, she was talking about the time she went and saw the movie in theaters with her once boyfriend. Even if we were talking about the album, 1978 will still be wrong (it came out in the US in 1979).

Dear god yes. People will write off any statistic, study, research etc etc that doesn't reinforce their point as "Anybody can manipulate data" or "Not a trusted source." Me and someone in my family got into an argument about bacteria. He thought that bacteria could only exist in dirty homes, and for me to claim we had bacteria in the food we cook and everywhere in the house was a grave insult to my mom.

Who the fuck would think that bacteria would only exist in dirty homes? Honestly, don't you learn that in like third grade?

I see. That's the problem with long replies - I was still writing it when you made your post saying it was a bad example.

When my parents are genuinely wrong it gets a little awkward. My dad hates when I pull out my smart phone and look stuff up when we disagree on something like a date or the name of something. Then again, he eats it up when I find out I'm wrong.

Definitely. Maybe not politically, but with the media. They're so quick to accuse any website they've never even seen of being some crazy anarchist porn site riddled with viruses.

I am willing to bet that your mom knows so much more about these sorts of things than you, and for you to say she's wrong about it is just ridiculous. She's lived longer, and knows much more than you. Stop trying to be better than her, or smarter, because you aren't.

This is the kind of argument they use on me. I'll go to extensive lengths to prove to them that not everyone on the internet is a rapist, and they'll still brush me off with "I'm older than you. Your points are now invalid."

This man speaks the truth. Just the other day my grandfather was telling me about how black people are inherently stupider than white people and gays are agents of the devil trying to condemn children to Hell. He's been alive for 80 years, so there's no way he could be wrong.

I understand that, but I am just asking about an instance where at least just one time they were just so wrong it's pretty embarrassing. It could be anything from something so simple, or something more complex...

Of course my parents has more life experiences than I do, I mean they raised me since birth. Both my parents are really good at banking, and my father is handy with mechanics; just as a few examples. But that doesn't mean that they could be wrong on somethings every now and then. I'll get things wrong too!

Whenever I have argued with one of my parents it was usually something unimportant like a movie/tv show or a past event that we remember differently, not like a serious political or scientific debate. However, I sometimes end up debating science related topics with my uncle while we're both drunk, those are usually interesting. Sometimes he'll say something that is just flat out wrong and if I try to correct him he won't believe me, which annoys me, unless I look the information up on the internet and show it to him. Basically, he can be pretty stubborn sometimes, it might just be the booze though.

I find my dad to often be wrong about things that require judgement and credible wisdom. His own sense of judgement is clouded by the misguidance of his own parents, I see.

My mother responds badly whenever she brings up a bad topic with me and I give my views on it. Like with the recent Norway killings she talked to me about it while she was driving me somewhere and I told her how I found the person interesting, she took it badly and said many times she didn't want me to end up like him not seeming to understand I just found him killing people and being fine about it interesting, not that I wanted to do it myself.

Its why I started betting money against one parent and then had the other find the answer and watch the money transfer ...
it shuts someone up in a real hurry when they loose 5 dollars over a date, idea, or fact...
We just make the bets horribly spacific so we can't get out of the bet

Im going to have to disagree with that. Im only 21, and my parents are 44 and 54, but im so much smarter than them. I can explain things to my dad, give references, and hell take it ot heart and learn. However, my mom will say im wrong no matter how much i prove myself. There was an issue where I was doing a better job parenting than they were, and instead of accepting my advice, considering my brother and sister acted alot better when i was in charge, she kicked me out of the house during my christmas visit. If my parents are so much smarter because theyve lived longer, i guess everyone under 44 belongs in remedial classes on life?

There have been child geniuses who were born from parents with average intelligence. The child graduates college before they are even 18, and their parents are in their 20s, 30s, etc. I get told, very often, infact, that i have a knowledge base most people have in their 80s and beyond, when theyve lived life, and learned that way.

Yes, My parents get into arguments with me occasionally. It is usually them accusing me of doing things, when they have no evidence, my mom is really bad about it. It usually comes down to me finding a way to prove that I didn't do whatever she has accused me of (even if I did do it). Then she starts cussing almost every other word, realizing that she can't be right.

I SERIOUSLY hope you aren't being serious here. I would be scared if you were.

Anyway, my mom is not the argumentative type, she just ignores what I say (no matter how disproving of her argument it is) and tells me to be quiet.

My brother, however, spews irrelevant and illogical statements at me whenever I'm trying to argue. He doesn't even understand the concept of opinion and pretty much calls me stupid for having a different taste of food or opinion than him, regardless of the logic behind it. His thick-shelled rock he calls a brain is very difficult to get through with.

What do you mean? You can be scared, but first, explain why you disagree with what I said. I mean seriously, Obama is the president at the current point in time.
