Ever lost something really special to you?

Yesterday afternoon I spent time in San Francisco, an hour away from where I live. I was on a coastline about less than feet above the sea and then my hat flew off to the waves. It's my red hat I got from Beijing, and I liked it because I wore it all the time and it went a long way with me. I liked the look of it and even if it seemed like an ordinary hat I can't find something like it. And I was bitching about it in front of my parents and the people who were there causing a dramatic scene and this man came up to me saying I could ask a fisherman to retrieve it for me, but there was none there. My dad tried to get attention of a sailor but he didn't get his attention. It was already about ten feet away and I gave up. That really pissed me off, and it's not the first time I lost a hat. I lost a hat one time riding a roller coaster at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo. It wasn't a nice hat though. I've also lost about two other beanies.

So how did you loose your special item, and how did you cope with its loss? I'm just glad it was a hat, and not a human or anything that you can't just get back. Who knows, maybe my hat will wash up on the shores of Hawaii or get stuck in the SF Bay.

correction: it was less than ten feet above the sea, so I couldn't just jump in there without hurting myself

I once had some special kind of stone, but I lost it somewhere. I was really sad about it.
