Comic Jam Information Thread

Hi everyone!

I'm organising a community event that will become known as the Comic Jam, and I encourage everyone with a mild interest in creating comics to join in.

What is it?

Similar to the Game Jam, the Comic Jam is an event in which everyone is given a theme, and tasked to create a narrative-based comic based on that theme within three days. The theme will be given at the beginning of those three days.

Why?

This event was conceived as an artistic challenge in creating art and comics within a limited period of time, and a creative exercise. But most of all, I believe that it will be fun for the people involved, and will be great to see what this artistic community can do in such circumstances.

Can I work with a partner?

Certainly! If you're an artist that wants to join but you're worried you can't write, then you can join up with a writer to create some sort of super comic. The same goes if you are a writer that cannot draw.

Artists can also team up with other artists to create comics together, if they want. For example, one person could do line art while the other colours. Be creative!

How long should the comics be?

They can be any length you like, but the idea behind the Comic Jam is to create a comic that tells a story, which one-page comics are not necessarily well suited to. Ideally the comics should span a number of pages.

I, personally, will be challenging myself to create a 24-page comic by myself during the time. If anyone wants to join me in that endeavour, then that's great. But, if you're not insane like I am, anything will suffice.

That sounds great! When is it?

The Comic Jam will begin at 12:01am EST on Friday the 19th of August, and will end at 11:59pm EST on Sunday the 22nd of August.

What happens when we're done?

When this is done we can compile all the comics made and submit them to a single thread for comments and critique from the community. If you're proud of your comic I'm sure you can submit it to the art portal as well.

You can submit them however you want.

E.g.

Individually on the art portal (though if they are more than a few pages, I wouldn't recommend this)

The pages strung together as long vertical files in the art portal (e.g. 7 pages in one art portal submission)

Each page submitted to an image hosting site, like your NG Dump, or other sites like Imageshack.

Or if you're feeling adventurous you can set up some sort of blog to house all the pages (like a Tumblr, or something similar).

Basically the idea will be to post the first page of your comic in a submission thread, and to have the rest of the pages linked to in that post. Where you upload the rest of the pages is up to you.

Indeed, if that's what you want. Any reasonable method of showcasing your comic should be fine.

Though I'd recommend against any method that forces people to download files, since in general people don't want to do that.
