Nice, I am excited for this one. I'm unfamiliar with Madness but I should be able to get a good feel after watching some animations. I've been in the mood for a revenge drama (a mix between Kill Bill and Taken) so that's probably what I am going to shoot for.

Noir Madness? That could definitely work......

What are we looking at for word limits and such? 5000 seems to be the default...

I think that's fairly safe to assume, but if you can crank out a well written piece more than that, more power to you.

Are scripts an acceptable format? Or is a chapter-based story fine?

The only advantage I see for a script is the possibility that it might get picked up for a flash, if you submit early that is. Otherwise, I'd say stick to a short story.

Damn, I am having a lot of trouble writing the mentioned revenge-drama, and I think I will instead try writing an adventure story. I saw Madness Combat through Madness 10 and there is virtually no plot :O I want to stay true to the Madness storyline and characters, especially keeping Hank, Tricky, J, Sanford and the shadowfire guy as central characters. Unfortunately, none of the characters really talk (so there is no dialogue) or do anything besides kill everything in sight.
However, there is a lot of time left until Madness Day, so hopefully, I will finish said story (I'm only about 300 words in. I'm aiming for 2,400 with 3 parts; split into about 900, 600, and 900 words, respectively). Hopefully I can finish this one ahead of time and write a better focused short story (the revenge one) that takes place outside of the Madness universe with a Madness vibe to it.

Can I make my own characters or do I have to use Hank and all the original characters Keinkel's made?
Can we submit multiple submissions or only one?

Oh well I like my submission anyway.
Am I the only one that thinks that holding a writing competition based on something with a barely tangible plot is a bad idea?

Yes. It gives author's a chance to use characters to make there own storyline.

I don't really think that the writing in NG contests are generally graded on their technical merits (the Writing Forum contests are a different story).

so it's a really bad fanfic with no plot?
No it's good fanfic with a plot made by the author to get you interested in the story.

Maybe I should rephrase myself; I think it's a terrible idea making a writing competition based on a solely action-based cartoon with no plot.

oxymoron
Well it's not the best idea making a writing contest about an animation solely based on fighting I agree. And yes there are some good fanfic if you search but I'm to lazy so I get stuck with the crap.

Yeah, that's why I will probably write two stories: one that is true-to-the-core Madness (incoherent plot, no dialogue, fast pace) and an offbeat revenge drama with a Madness theme (Kill Bill is an inspiration). Madness has no substance other than pure action. Writing a story that is all action is lame and actually boring, which explains why all the entries so far are just a few paragraphs.

honestly, one hundred dollars in store credit isn't enough to entice someone with enough skill to actually make it work into writing something worthwhile. I feel bad for all the unpaid volunteer judges who have to wade through pages of poorly written garbage

I really hope that most of the people are not interested in writing only for the cash.

If you're writing for the sake of cash, you're in the wrong fucking business buddy. Besides, if you don't like it, don't write about it. No one's holding you at gunpoint to participate in this contest.

CUPCAKES, dear sir.
Hardly a refined work, but it was so damn... interesting. I assume that being on the internet you've heard of it.
I'm probably going to try to submit something and end up with something terrible and unfit for contests, like usual. But darnit this time I'm gonna submit it anyway!

But writing is about the money. And the money here isn't enough to entice a decent entry.

You're doing it wrong then. And anyways, you've got to start somewhere. You can use contests like these to practice your writing. If you've got more experience then there's a better chance for you to actually make money from writing, if that's the whole reason you write.
For clarification: it is not store credit; it is real money. I used the money I got from the last one to buy myself a sweet Wah-wah pedal for my geetar.

Writing is *definitely* not about the money. There's very little money to be made in it. I don't think there's any professional writer who got into writing because they thought it would make them rich. As far as I know, most professional writers are doing it just because they really love to write, and getting paid for it means they don't have to look for another job and break away from writing.
Back again! I think I'm actually coming up with something readable this time. I think it's got a lot of nods to the series that fans will like, and enough originality to be interesting. Yay me! Anyway, I was wondering if there was an official deadline for this, or if it's just kind of a "before madness day sometime" deal.
