I know that this is kind of a late question to be asking considering so many movies do it now a days, but what is the point to after credit scenes. What it the point of making us sit through credits just to see a scene at the end that they could easly put before the credits. They already got our money from buying the tickets or dvd/blue-ray, so I can't see it being for more money.
I know it sounds like I'm complaining but I'm not, I'm just curious.

They obviously want you to see the credits. They don't make that long ass list of stuntmen, technical people, and caterers for you to walk out on it.

Pretty much this. It's just a cheap thing to do at the end to keep you watching. I remember there being some movie theaters I have gone to in the past that literally just cut off the film when credits start because everyone walks out at that point.

Funny thing is there are usually a lot of people who sit through the credits at the end of the movie and just discuss talk about the movie a bit more, whip out cellphones call others and text as well while others are leaving.

Me and my uncle always wait until we see the disclaimer at the end saying that: "All the themes, stories and characters in this film are fictitious and any similarities between them and real life are purely coincidental."
As if a movie about achieving intergalactic travel with a ring isn't fictitious, we wouldn't know unless they told us.

It's probably just motivation to stay and sit through the credits. Though I always stay through the credits and clap at the end of the film unless it's badly written childhood-raping crap, it's respectful to do so.

Wouldn't you be kinda pissed if you worked really hard on something and while you get your little moment of credit, everybody just leaves.

I sort of like that it gives you some time to talk to your friends about the movie and then you are sort of rewarded with a small scene. It's like an Easter egg or something.

They probably are put in because they usually reveal that a sequel is already being made. And don't most Marvel movies have a trailer after the credits?

They make them, so that you watch the credits. It is a tribute to everyone who contributed to the movie.

What's the point? Everyone wants their names out, it's just a way of getting you to sit through the credits.
Or rather go to the toilet, or just FF through it.
I'm back, I guess.

If they want more people to see the credits, they should put them at the start like more films are doing now.

They want you to see the credits.
OF COURSE, WHAT A NICE WAY!
It's quite cheap though , like SCTE3 said. Who wants to know who the musicians were unless they were going to murder them, bribe them or spam them with letters and whatnot?

I don't care about them myself, what I do when I go to cinemas is to sit through the credits as everyone else is leaving already, then when credits are over most people are gone making it far nicer to leave. When they make people stay to watch those credits all it does is make me then have to spend ages sitting down AFTER the credits for everyone else to get out of the way.

I actually don't know if there's a definitive purpose of them, though I hear Captain America: The First Avenger used it beautifully.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End did it pretty good too. Showed the fate of characters that were obviously not going to be in it's sequel(s).

much like the majority of people, I hate movies that have a scene after the credits. especially considering, more often than not, it holds very little point or substance.
not that it matters. there are few movies that I'm willing to see in theaters and none that I'm willing to stay after the credits for.
the only plus to this horrible custom is that it keeps morons out of my way when I go to leave the theater. actually, more often than not, I'm the first one out.
even if I have the furthest seat from the exit.

Simply this. Same thing goes for movies that include out-takes, especially such as pixar used to do frequently in their movies, and make up out-takes for fun just to keep to people put in their places until all the credits had rolled.

The credits were used to simply state everyone that worked on the movie so movie critics etc. can easily keep track.
Now people use it like this. Meh,

The problem I have with after credit scenes is that I usually end up missing them because I assume that once the credits come up, there is nothing else afterwards, and it's generally what some films do anyway.
Annoys me really because with both Thor and Captain America I missed the after credit scenes because I didn't know there would be any.
