Yes, that is most likely the reason. Apart from that, JPEG´s and GIF's are the usal image files for the internet.

Maybe we used to be able to, but the wiki didn't keep up when that feature was disabled.

But look, the list of mods is up to date.
I remember first time I was going to upload a png, then I saw what files I was restricted to and got mad going through a pict conversion.
I once also tried to upload an mp3 on the dumping grounds. It uploaded, but wouldn't let me submit it.

I'm fairly sure I read somewhere that we're going to be able to use the .png format on the forums after the redesign.
So, sit tight and look forward to the best image format on a BBS near you.

I thought holla was demodded/stepped down.

Nah, .png was never an allowed format.
I can't say for sure why it is on the wiki, but as deckheadtottie pointed out we're probably going to enjoy PNGs very soon. About time, I say.

PNG is fairly superior in most situations when it comes to quality vs file size. They also handle transparency much better than GIFs. The latter should be used for animations, and JPEG for images with complex colors, such as pictures.

Aw man, you're right.
You could upload .png files before the redesign, to my knowledge.
I guess it's the filesize that Tom's worried about, besides, who gives a fuck?
just roll with it nerd

Why not just use your snipping tool and snip the picture?

Yeah liljim said it because I remember reading it to.
I think we should be able to post pictures in PNG form for quality reasons. Also, isn't 150k a tad bit low? At least double it. I cannot tell you how many times I have found a really cool picture and not been able to post it.

I agree with this mainly because i can never post a .gif picture without going over limit.

.png's are usually even bigger filesize, limit would have to be increased if they were going to allow .png
Whenever there is a .png I want to post I always open it in paint and save it as a .jpg in my Worthless folder, then delete it later.

No you couldn't.
And yes, we do plan on allowing them in future. Maybe not with the launch of the re-re-re-re-redesign, but maybe shortly after, once all the other kinks are ironed out.

Are you fucking retarded? Png is lightyears ahead of those formats, jpg and gif can both go fuck themselves with their over lossy bullshit and digital artefacts.
Artifacts* even, rageposting ftw
also doubles, umad?

Whether you agree or disagree with what he was saying (NG wiki entry aside), jpeg and gif formats (as opposed to png) have been more widely supported without any quirks amongst web browsers for a long time. As usual, IE is the cause of most of this misery when it comes to png issues, have a read through some of the details here.

lol its way quicker to drag a box around something and save it.
