Hey, i've recently made a phpbb forum, it looks pretty awesome. Its going to be for the intended audience of nerds. It has a 18+ DVD download link forum, japanese adult video download links forum etc, stuff like that. As well as video game and movies talk.
I may also add an arcade, where you can play against other forum users scores.
The only thing is, i never know how to get people to join.
Can anyone give me any advice?

I would be a tad reluctant to join a porn forum, basically. But try spamming the comments on porn sites with the link, I guess?

Well it's not only porn. I just felt like i had to mention that as its not just a normal video game/movies/music forum. It has other stuff too.
I made website review forum and Tech, to talk about software etc as well as pixel pot and paint pot where you can share your artworks.
It's everything a nerd needs!

With subtle advertising, mah boy. Basically what you just did here. Frequent other sites and forums that have a similar niche and have an invitation to your forum in your signature or whatever. Make the site unique and not just a cookie cutter board.
May I also advice you to make sure that your site is well founded in the legal department...

We have a system so that when you register you can only post in the 'APPROVAL' forum.
Here other members of the forum will decide whether they like your or not, then if they do you will be approved and can view the rest.
But at the moment because of the size of the userbase im just approving most people.

Also, i'd like a flash drawn styled banner. I've tried contacting a few people from the Art portal but have had no sucess. If anyone has an idea or design for the banner that would be great to hear too!
If your idea and style of art is really good i am willing to pay a comission for you to take that idea further.

I'm not a fan of this waiting to get approved.
You could join a load of other forums and spam your links on there and ask them how you can get more users. That might get a few.

Me neither. At least make it so that users waiting for approval can read the rest of the forum, since I see no harm in that. I understand that you're making the community more selective, but people waiting for approval will lose interest if they can't even read the other forums.

You should probably have something else on your site worth looking at, besides the forum, if you want a large, stable user base.

I agree, thats why i thought the whole porn/18+ side of the site would come in handy.
In the AKIBA and NAUGHTIES forum is DVD links to off site downloads.
But i cant think what else to have..

And an especially big thanks to the people who did join. I really didn't expect a single person to join. Not that the site isn't worth joining, just a lot of people don't try out new websites/forums nowadays once they have a good site already.
