PSP vs Photoshop 2011-07-27 11:12:00 Reply

This might be an insipid or just plain dumb question. If so, forgive me.

I'm no artist by any stretch, nor am I very well versed with photomanip software. I've been using Paint Shop Pro for a while now for my rudimentary artistic needs, but I'm thinking about maybe getting a bit more seriously involved in graphic art. So my question is thus:

In a choice between Paint Shop Pro and the perennial favorite Photoshop, which would you choose? Why? How do the prices compare? Are there any other, less known programs which you think are better than both PSP and Photoshop when it comes to photomanipulation or just general artistry?

Also: Flash and Photoshop are both published by Adobe. Does this mean that Photoshop has any special functions relating to Flash?

Thanks for the help! =)

Which version do you have? Some of the newer versions compare really well to photoshop.

Try using gIMP, it's a free, open source photo editing program similar to photoshop and in some cases is better. It works on linux too, which is a bonus.

Copy and paste is about it as far as I'm aware.

Thanks for the help! =)

No problem.

I don't know paint shop pro, however depending on your needs GIMP may be fine for you. It's freely downloadable, so you might want to give that a try.

Flash and Photoshop integration is pretty terrible, nonexistant practically. Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator are somewhat integrated I believe.

Well, my own computer is in the store being repaired so I can't really install any programs right now. But once I get it back I'll definitely look into GIMP. Thanks!

I'll be honest - as much as I like to use GIMP for my everyday arting, if you're looking to do"graphic art" which I assume to be web/GUI/banner/etc designs, logos and signatures then you're most likely not going to be very happy with GIMP. The program becomes very uncomfortable to use once you start using many layers (if somebody tried to do a 100+ layer image in GIMP, then I would weep for them).

However, if you meant sketching, drawing and painting then disregard what I said, GIMP will suit you well. In fact, I would recommend you give MyPaint a try then.

Oh, sorry if I sounded pretentious. With graphic art I just meant pictures. Art you look at. I've no clear goal in mind, really.
