I think the main reason is because the sprites used are almost never created by the author.
Seeing 1000 movies using the the same Mario/Sonic sprites gets old.
Its even worse when the whole thing is badly tweened etc.

Yeah I noticed that too. Go on youtube and search sonic for hire thats a good sprite animation and it's funny

THANK YOU!!!! SAME HERE!!!
sprites are for the people who are lazy and have no creativity. But its good for beginners and for those who dont have tablet.
It usually takes no tallent, were as the art was created from someone else.
Fact: 99.9% of all sprite animation is created by 12 year old furries.
pic related, an i have no talent pack
NEVER FORGET.
Nothing wrong with sprites as long as they were made specifically for the game in question. If it's an animation rather than a game, then you shouldn't use sprites because regular animation looks a million times better - you only use sprites in an animation if you don't know how to animate.
i personally don't mind sprites, as long as they're animated well. But i imagine people hate them because when compared to full body fps it just seems lazy, plus what the other guy said about not making the sprites yourself.
Overall i guess it's frustration because some sprite animations get daily prize when full body fps anims dont lol.

LOL
But I cant say that I hate sprite.
the reason most people on newgrounds hate sprites is that, your not drawing and making your characters, and most sprite movies are the same thing over and over, id say 80% of sprite movies are fighting
If your like me, and you make your own sprites, then that's AWESOME. But some people steal other peoples sprite sheets (yes, its stealing, believe it or not people made those, and have rights to them). In my opinion full body FBF animation is the best way to go, and next to that is tweened animation (depending on how you do it).
So if you make sprites, kudos to you, but if you steal sprites, F you.

Nothing is better than a smoth FBF animation.
but I'm not a fan of tweening
and to the topic Sprite movies are awesome if they use original sprites just for the movie.
Sprites are good to learn the basics of the flash interface.
A creative sprite movie is fine, as long as it's not short... (*talks about himself*)
If you can't draw, then don't animate. Unless you made the sprites from scratch, I SCOFF AT THOU.
The reason I hat sprites is because they're overrated. Will someone PLEASE explain to me how the Super Mario Z series is highly rated? It completely lacks realism and fluid movement, the writing makes me want to vomit, and on top of all that, it is somehow actually better than most other sprite flashes.
Most spriters say sprites are just for fun. The few of them that learn to draw, ditch sprites and never look back. The others spend their time laboring over others' art trying to twist it until they can finally say 'original character do not steal'.
Honestly, I grew up with sprite comics and cartoons and I loved them, many still have a lot of charm to me. But when half a million people are beating a dead, stolen horse for 10 years expect some backlash.

A whole lotta people had learned how to animate from making sprite movies, so hold your opinion somewhere else.
Back in 2005-2007, while you were still drinking milk, 1/5 of the flash portal were sprte movies
and they were damn great.
If someone can't draw, doesn't mean this person shouldn't use flash for other animating purposes.
SMBZ inspired a lot of people...
Still, i prefer digital tablet animation

...drinking milk? Is that a euphemism for youth?
Anyway, show me one 'great' sprite flash, and I'll rethink my opinion.
OMG I DRINK MILK! seriously that was a stupid fucking comment.

Do you really have to ask why? sprites are ussually premade images from already exisiting video games.
The exception to the rule of hating sprites is when they are new images entirely.
Hay guize can some one give sprite sheet for sly cooper 2 and 3 but not 1 because not as good even though game Informer gave 1 9.5 and others less it's okay if u have 1 but i'd prefer not.
sprites are ok when they are well animated and at LEAST slightly original. like the game mario combat. there was custom mario sprites in that and that made it really good. it was also well animated and fun.
I like the concept of the sprites, recreate a completely different films with your favorite games. It's like a dream for fans. The fact is, a lot of sprites movie are just bad.
Sprites fights are boring because you can only takes one camera shot. The fight movies used to have a lot of shot. They are statics! Ok you can edit them but most of the spriters don't.
Most of the sprites movies are too generic. Too many poorly jokes based on pop culture references or audio from a popular series. The best example of poorly written serie is Super Smash Bros Z. I used to like this shit when i was, like, 11 years old. Now I can't stand that: This is just a stupid story about chaos emerauld and a FUCKING crossover with Sonic. But how can we hate a serie who has a Hotel Mario's joke?
So ok, I've watch some "ok" sprites films, such has the Paul Ter Voode movies or the Yoshi-1Up works but it's just exeptions. So ok, I can understand that's 10 years old child like "The Real Luigi's Mansion" but after that's age I don't know how can we like this kind of movies.
PS: Elfam, I disagree with you! If people just wanna makes tribute of there characters or used graphics for recreate good stories that's fine, especially if they put effort into it. It's not animation, It's sprites animation. It's different.
my personal 2 cents is that they kinda are a tad bit annoying. I honestly wouldnt mind them if they weren't cliche like everyones been saying. I dont mind them as a base to start and learn because everyones gotta start somewhere. but even on other sites its just soo irritating seeing the masses all do the same thing. Im honestly not against the idea, but its just like beating a dead horse now. Also i find that because the growing masses of the preticularly unoriginal ones, it does snuff out alot of creative works that people have done from scratch. Same goes towards any other type of project and ect. Hand made sprites are a different story though, those i dont have a major issue with because someone truely put in their time to make something, rather than borrow an already done pic
Exactly. Like how stick figure animation is great for learning the basics of animation in terms of fluid movement and showing impact, sprites are great for learning the basics of flash in general.
If you see a future with flash, go for it and make some sprite anims, i can't promise they will be praised if you submit them, though it'd be good practice.
There's really nothing more to it than that.

Don't bring sticks into this. My opinion on stick figure animation is the exact opposite of my position on sprites. The fact that the stick figures aren't fleshy creatures adds to the animation's focus on choreography as opposed to detail.
I think Tom said something like that once. I agree completely.

Sure, but in terms of learning purposes sprites and sticks are quite similar. Despite you having to draw one (very quickly i might add) and just copy+paste the other...

Sticks Figures could be really original, the "Animation vs. Animator" episodes for example. But yeah, most of them have the same concept.
