Me, personally, the war would have been fought on later terms.
The closest Obama would get to the white house would be cleaning the carpets.
We should have let the south secede
Except for Florida. Florida's alright

I don't even think Obama would be born.

You guys know that the civil war was fought over the secession of the south and not slavery, right? And that slavery was outlawed by states in the union by the time the war was fought? So the north would be just about the same as it is today and so would states annexed by the union government (i.e. Hawaii where Obama was born).
cocks.

No, I didn't know about that, my US history is rather poor and I don't care.

See the problem with making a joke about something you are wrong about is that it makes you instantly unfunny
So have fun being unfunny I guest if that's what you enjoy doing

There's no reason the war wouldn't be fought. The North needed the South because the North's economy was industry based around the South's economy of cotton/agriculture. The North didn't want the South to leave so they tried every compromise to get them to stay. The North had no choice but to go to war.
Now a better question is what would've happened if the North lost the war. If the North lost it's hard to determine what would happen to future states/territories westward and who would be the first to settle/claim them, but it makes me wonder if slavery might still exist in the South today or for how much longer down the road.
Slavery would still be in existance.. wars would be fought with more prominantly black men, africa would be under far more control then it is now.. a aids pandemic may have either broken out or compleatly stopped as it was and is killing the slaves..
the war was enevitable yes but the outcomes are different..

First you're asking what if it wasn't fought and then you're saying it would've been fought later. So it would've still happened retard. In my mind if it didn't happen at all we would have two presidents and more than likely eventually two countries or something similar. The problems between the two sides were just that strong to that something was going to happen

I said I didn't care about improving my US history knowledge. Unless it's going to win me a million euros, I normally wouldn't care.

Fix'd.
Slow approaching to equality of rights to slaves and then acceleration and forming something close to today. Or utter decline.

If the civil war was never fought and the South successfully succeeded, I imagine that the North would have to manage some precarious diplomacy with the South and vise versa. One of the US's greatest advantages is that it's only bordered by two allies and two oceans. If the Confederate states successfully formed their own nation and the two countries (the Confederate states and the Union) refused to form an alliance, it could have been an issue. Though, you never know. Maybe they would have formed an alliance, such as how Britain and the US did.
I think that today, politics would be different. The strongest Republican influence comes from the South, so I think that the North would have a considerably more liberal government than today whereas the South's government would be considerably more conservative.
I doubt that the South would still have slavery. Not many people in the South today still approve of slavery, so I think that would have changed eventually, albeit not that soon. A huge portion of the 1960's civil rights movement happened in the South, as well.
Economically, I think it would have a drastic influence. The South had a lot of resources that the North coveted, so economically, the North would suffer if it lost that asset, which was largely the motivation for the civil war. The South, as well, would suffer because it's economic status under a slave economy was not exactly healthy and was more or less and aristocracy.

In addition, much of the North was already industrializing while the South maintained a muscle-powered agricultural economy. While the South may have had resources, the North had the means of production. The main point of maintaining the Union was because had the two economies remained separated they would both collapse since both rely on each other for prosperity.
Sure, you might make cash crops and the like, but technological stagnation would have caused the South's eventual demise just had it been with Rome's demise. With the North, much of the resources would have to be imported, causing a great strain on the economy and ultimately causing an economic stagnation.
In the end, Abe Lincoln did more than save the Union. Had the South seceded from the Union, Britain would have likely begun to Imperialize China as well as the United States. With this, they would have had a vast amount of economic and political power on the global spectrum. From a big picture point of view, the Civil War was a bigger deal than most might make it out to be.
Also, it's actually a good thing to value history, since there are many, MANY things that people could learn from to ensure that we do not go the way of Rome. Honestly, from a historical perspective we are indeed on the timeline for the demise of the American Empire.
Learn, and be empowered. Or just don't care and learn Chinese in a few years.
