How Do you do it ? 2011-07-23 11:40:39 Reply

Hi, I'm new (thats against the rules right ? sorry, I don't see another way). I'm 14 and I think I'm a good drawer, but I don't know much about technics since I've never done any artclasses. Nor do I know what most people draw with, on a pc or do you scan it in ? This one is a drawing I've done with pencil and scanned in ;)

How Do you do it ?

Whatever the bloody hell you feel like. Unless you are working for a company that tells you what you must use, you can use anything you feel comfortable with. Computer+tablet, computer+mouse, pencils, pens, oils, charcoal, watercolours, your own piss etc.
With that said, don't forget to experiment and try out new things.

Well... Your better than some of the new comers we get around here from time to time, but some practice, study and some refinement is in order.
You should start by trying to learn about the basics of art. Since you mention that you haven't taken any art classes, and judging by this picture, and your avatar if you made that, you could use the basics.

On this piece, you need to work on some of your line work. Its a little fizzy. You also need to darken your tones and shadows on the face, I can see where you started to add value, but then kind of stopped short.

your anatomy and spacing of the features of the face seem good though. Were you working from some reference?

Anyways enough with the basic critique, and on to more about your question.
Here, as well as on the internet in general, we are a mix of different artist who import their work on to computers in different ways. Some of us are bound by the limits of our work, some by the hardware.
I tend to sketch and then scan where I digital ink and color. I think most of Ornery's finished professional pieces are much too large so he has to take high quality photos of his works to post them up. Fifty-50 uses a mouse and flash to produce some of his work. Sometimes How artist get their work to the digital realm is almost as unique as some of the pieces themselves.

So continue to post, and see the works of the Art Forum

P.S. please don't say "good drawer" its just bad form my friend.

That was more like an invitation to upload some of your preexisting work.

As mentioned with my short critique, your current piece alright, and needs some improvement. I do not wish to instill false hope or lie to you when I say I like it, but at the same time I don't dislike it. Its an alright piece and a start. You should construct a personal showcase thread and start uploading a lot of your work there. Name it something good and catchy, or just call it Hulokko's Art Thread if you want to go with the old standby.
Once you make the thread and start uploading your work there, it gives people a consolidated place to view your work and your progress. It also makes a good place to upload works you are working on and get valuable feedback while constructing your latest piece.

Or some times people just like to see your process

Also if your interested in drawing self portrait, check out this collab that is going on.
And here is a self Portrait Tutorial recently uploaded to DrawSpace.

Just for the record, when you're drawing a portrait you don't generally want to draw each individual tooth so heavily. It makes the person look a little retarded there. Other than that it's not half bad.

All criticism aside, when I draw something I scan it, open it with photoshop, and adjust the levels to make the lines bolder and and smudges fainter. I don't know how that'd blow over with a portrait though.

I'd suggest a lot of life drawing, anatomy, and construction improving classes. It's ok for your age its pretty good, but youve gotta learn how to draw that without using a picture. And how to make it feel like its real and not flat e.g. The shading on the neck is one shade and flat, it feels solid and not like its going around the form like light does . Also avoid smudging at all costs, its a nice little final touch thing but untill you know how to use it properly it makes every drawing look flat . But keep going, do more studies from real life and avoid too much copying of pictures if you want it to look more alive

I'm not sure what that previous drawing is, but I strongly suggest you stick with your pencil and paper drawings at first. The first pencil drawing you posted is already decent, and you could gain a lot by practicing more.

If you want to switch to digital painting, try scanning and coloring your pencil drawings. It's a great first step into CG art, and you'll learn a lot.

Besides, who needs art courses ^^
