Well, the NG forums are more personal, like a community. You get to know things about others, possibly make friends or enemies etc. I guess that could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it though.

Because these forums don't look like an unorganised mess. They're also not generic looking. I like that.

The forum integration, layout and being a subsidiary of a larger website is cool.

Userbase-wise I don't think we're any better than 4chan or similar websites. But there's a sense of common interest and having a userbase just small enough to know many users by name.

Also I think the very strict moderation is in someways beneficial, in that they don't 'just' delete the things that are illegal, but that's not to say I understand why they lock threads after a question has been answered or delete threads that they don't understand etc.
