Yeah it does have some dark moments. like (spoiler) berry gets shot and they forget to revive her.

Disgaea. No matter how much humor they put into the game, you can't shake the fact you're a demon, and your killing other demons and heroes, for your own selfish and greedy purposes.....

Mortal Kombat is so violent that you can consider a dark game.

Parts of Half life 2, like going through Ravenholm. or at least it felt that way because I played it on a friday night with the lights out.

Yeah, that ending hits you pretty hard. It was such a funny game so for the ending to be that depressing kind of catches you off guard.

Yes that game does have many dark points in the plot.

Mass Effect.
While not dark in general some pretty fucked up shit goes on it, most noteworthy would be Dr.Saleons experiments.

The metroid series can be pretty dark. Like in Fusion when you see Dark Samus the first time, or the times where it seems like the computer is against you. Or in Metroid Prime when you get attacked by the corrupted Chozo ghosts. Then there's that time in Prime 2 when you come across all the dead Federation troops and in Prime 3 when you have to fight your fellow hunters. I could go on, but I'll probably be here to long sooo... Okay, 1 more. It was kinda sad finding all the Lore about all the different species inthe Prime Trilogy. I felt pretty bad for the Chozo.

Agreed. Scenes like this (NSFW) is the reason the game was rated M, but at the same time, it shows the lack of humanity so many characters have.

for the record Bioshock WAS mentioned before that whole uprising, but whatevs. I think the best games are the ones that seemingly bright and happy on top but have very dark undertones. What's a better example than Psychonauts?

Limbo is rather dark, and I don't just mean visually. Thats one of my favourite games ever made, everybody in the world should play it.

The first thing I thought of was Alan Wake; and no, its not a horror game. Its scary in some bits, I guess. It'll make you jump every once in a while but it's not as horror as say, Silent Hill 2 or Dead Space 1.
Bioshock 1 or 2 are good "non horror" games to play as well.
