So I never offically made an art thread for myself and that seems to be the thing to do. Been a while since I've posted anything. My portfolio can be found here: http://mpoulter.newgrounds.com/art/

Below is a WIP that I was hoping to get some advice on. It's a simple sight gag so I'm not spending too much time on it, but I wanted to get soem opinions on background colors, characters sizes, and anything else relevant. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

The man looks like it was made with a completely different program but the man does look better but you might have put a little too much red. I can't really see the dogs details. I mostly see the dogs eyes.

Your character weight seems off. He also seems off balance. The anatomy (ok, ok cartoon anatomy) looks a little off. I don't think his eyes should be red since a laser is focused and the beams would be shot from the pupils. That's nitpicking though. The background needs an upgrade but you did say it was a WIP. All in all not too shabby. I lol'd. Gues that's a HOT DOG! (knee slapper, I so funny)

Thanks for the feedback. Background is def placeholder while I figure out what kind of scale and colors I want to use. In terms of anatomy- I assume you're saying that the legs are too short for the body? I can see that. I was ok with it myself. Techically I suppose he would fall over as well. I could always move the forwad leg back...
and I'll def turn down the red on the dog or play around with dif filters.

He did say it was a WIP and that it was a placeholder. "ugh The background is just awful!" is not a helpful Critique for a WIP.

I mean that is fair. It is fairly awful. I threw it together farily quickly with the paintbrush tool and no straight lines, shading, or color choice, etc.

I do prefer charcter design to backgrounds though so I was hoping for some advice. Redoing with the straight line tool now but its a bit too rigid for me and I'm still trying to get it so the color choice doesn't overshadow the foreground action

I think the background is distracting from the foreground cause the lines are much stronger and draw the viewer on it. Also it's kinda weird how he is placed in the door, almost as if he is framed.

As for the char itself, he looks as if he is going to fall on his back. His right leg is shorter than the other and the hand looks weird. It looks as if a finger is missing.

Generally I can see that the character is in a cartoon style but the off anatomy still makes him look wrong.

Also I think the skin is a little too yellowish, like he is sick or something. The shoe could use some shading since the rest of the body.

The dog should be a bit more visible, the red is covering it too much.

Still not quite finished, but he background is more than a placeholder.

I had thought the character's body position was alright given that the lasers were meant to be knocking him off balance. But I def see what you mean about the leg being too short. Wish I had noticed before I had gotten this far...

I turned down the red on the dog. I think I still need to play with it, but I think I'll finish up on it soon. Like I said its just a stupid sight gag joke, not a brilliant work of art. Still I wish I had come here for character advice when he was still uncolored/unshaded.

It's really no problem. It did suck after all. And I'm not one to get discouraged over a welld eserved flame or two
